9 speed cassette on 10 speed hub

Post by asbrown1972 »

I'm currently running 9 speed Tiagra and need a new wheel, but can only find 8/9/10 speed wheels on sale.
When I bought a 10 speed wheel to use on the turbo and fitted a 9 speed cassette with a spacer behind it the chain rubs against the frame in top gear.
Do I need to search for a specific 9 speed wheel, or is there another solution?

Remove the spacer behind the cassette on your turbo wheel and the 9s cassette will fit without any problem - there's only about half a millimetre difference in the overall cassette width between 9s and 10s cassetes, as the cogs are more closely spaced on the 10s.

Thanks, so any 8/9/10 speed wheel should fit?

My memory says that it's the 10-speed cassettes that use a spacer on 8/9/10 freehubs

FWIW I think that is correct.
