What model Moulton bicycle?

Post by Malesso671 »

I’ve looked on the Moultonbicycles website but can't figure out what model this is. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Pics in the link below.

It looks like an early AM, made in Bradford on Avon, likely in the mid '80s. Now, 40ish years later, it appears to have non-original parts, inc a Caprio-based back wheel but as it has a gear hanger, but no sign of a front mech, let's plump for it being an AM7, made in 1985.

IIRC AM series moultons have an uncommon rim/tyre size, which might be a bit of a clincher for it being an AM7.

Yes - that and the difficulties in finding suitable rear sprockets make it an awkward bike to maintain. Shimano's Caprio were a good match - unsurprising as Alex Moulton worked with Shimano in the development of the gear cluster and the rear mech - but Shimano no longer make the group-set. There's talk of a Korean maker that offers suitable cassettes, though...
A shame as AMs are a lovely bike to ride.

It was an AM14 that convinced me over the space of about an hour that I would own a Moulton spaceframe at some point. I'd previously had a go on a Bridgestone Moulton and liked it a lot, but not to the point of "I really want something like this".

Were 17" wheels still the only option I suspect it would never have graduated from the wish-list (not the wheel size itself but rather the distinct lack of a selection of readily available tyres for them).

As mentioned, tyres were the biggest problem with the AM series bikes, (I had an AM5, 5 speed SA hub & the AM7).

I rode many thousands of miles on them, but those Wolber 17" tyres would wear out quite quickly.

I later had the ATB with 20" wheels, not so good a ride, as it was a fair bit heavier.

currently, in 17"x1-1/4" (369mm BSD) you can buy Schwalbe Kojaks @ ~£40 a pop and errr, that's it....AFAICT. Not much choice!
