Exactly.

A glimpse at OS and CycleTravel shows a designated route (224) from near the station, out into woods west of the town as far as Four Marks, plus a great number of green byways and bridleways south of that locality.

This looks like a good “chassis” for a primarily off-road ride, with potential to extend if you’re happy to devise your own extensions https://www.hants.gov.uk/thingstodo/cou ... writersway

You could link on via a zig-zag of green byways and small lanes to another part of 224, which runs along the track bed of the old Meon Valley railway, very scenic, if you wanted something a bit longer, and that in turn links to the South Downs Way if you really want to test your legs.

In fact, the more I look, the more I find - it seems that Alton might be a bit of a gateway to interesting mostly-off-road, rides.

Many thanks, it’s always useful to have local knowledge and recommendations and the Writers way looks good to keep my wife entertained as well
Cheers
