I use my phone as a satnav all the time, I download a large google map of the area I am in otherwise it stops working if you are in an area where there is no phone signal. It connects automatically to the cars phone speaker and microphone. The google sat nav is pretty good.
As far as I am aware its illegal to make a call or accept a call in which you have to press the screen button to accept a call. So I am not quite sure what to do to stay legal?

no it cant be touched, touching your phone for any reason while you're driving counts as 'using' it, and its the 'using' part which is against the law.

https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/200 ... gulation/2

Whilst the phone can be put in a holder, which must not obstruct the drivers view, the phone cant be touched physically whilst you are driving, even if you are stationary, and 'safely parked' whilst the engine is running, unless you are paying for a toll road or drive-thru with contactless payment.

but fundamentally you cannot use a mobile phone whilst driving, that parts not negotiable.
Thanks. I had read the originating legislation, but its use of 'handheld' device had confused me. There's an awful lot of incorrect interpretation out there, I note.

The legislation has now been cited.

If you turn off transmission from the 'phone then use of the device is not unlawful under these provisions.

But I'm not aware of any successful prosecutions for using a sat nav with or without transmission turned off.... anyone?

Hit a cyclist on the wrong side of the road while driving home from the pub. Over the limit at the scene but on the limit for the official test carried out later.

Suspended sentence and only a 3 year ban.

One year suspended sentence and 2 year ban for killing cyclist on the left of the lorry.
Sentencing, Judge Peter Lodder KC said "I accept that because she was undertaking you she sadly contributed to her own death, but the fact is... you were not paying sufficient attention.

"You did not look into the appropriate mirrors on your vehicle, and had you done so you would have seen this young lady and she would still be alive."

The court heard that Gibbs took responsibility for not checking his mirror.
The details aren't entirely clear but the remarks by the judge do seem to me to contradict each other. How can you contribute to your own death by cycling legally on the road?

feels alot like the judge has jumped to assumptions there, the usual the cyclist didnt see the big scary truck they know that can kill them and just blindly rode up the inside as we all do...wait is it just me that has panic attacks everytime only inches seperate me from a 32 tonne truck?

I cant see on that bridge how you would cycle up the inside of anything.

12month driving ban. 12month sentence suspended for 18months and 300 hours of community service.

I cant believe they even used the fact the defendent crashed his car, in a single car crash in a 30mph limit, into a tree more than 10 years ago, as mitigation.

The latest in a long line of pathetic verdicts and sentences around here. The acquittal from death by dangerous driving was by a jury that seems to think it's OK to look away for 10 seconds on a fast dual carriageway!

Norfolk has some great places to cycle, but the A roads aren't among them, and if the worst happens, the police, judges, juries and local government are currently institutionally motorist, so don't expect any justice.
