I've got one of those Topeak stands in there, with extra fittings for two more bikes. Limited overhead clearance means that they have to hang with the wheels out. But some still just stand on their noses.
isn't it hard getting them out of the loft?

also doesn't it get very hot up there during the summer?

It's not as easy as if they were hung on the wall in a garage. But we don't have a garage. We do have a shed, but that's already full with everyday bikes, and my trike :-)

Our loft has an unusually-large hatch, or we'd never have got a tandem in there. It seemed the only option. Now I'm quite used to dropping bikes down when I want them.

Unfortunately N+1 only works for bikes and not for storage spaces...

It seems to me that with some wood, basic tools and a bit of ingenuity you could come up with a bespoke solution that fits your home and requirements. Perhaps a good darker evening's project?

Bespoke maybe a polite word for any heath robinson monstrosity i may manage to cobble together. Feel free to post any plans. Especially if integrates a broomstick.

Fence D rails ( cos they're treated wood for outside long term )
a couple of pallets to harvest small planks of wood for the roof
A roll of felt and pot of bitumen
Some thunder bolts
Edit -- you may need some concrete slabs and a couple o bags of sand if on grass.

Makes a handy lean-to -- I knocked one up as a firewood store -- easy.

There are storage pole solutions like this one

And if you don't get on with it, you could practise your pole-dancing moves.

What about the ones bike shops use to display bikes, that the rear axle just slots into.

How about some bike stands like this. It's a mini-velo in this one, but the stand handles full-size wheels without any problem:

I suspect that it would be very easy to knock up a rudimentary framework, eg using 4" x 2" timber at which point it could be furnished with any fitting really intended for a wall, allowing bikes to be hung up by the wheels (even a plastic-coated screw-in hook would probably do). I don't think even the most basic woodwork skills should be especially challenged by this since it only requires a few cuts and a few screws.
