I’m sure that you have your own excellent reasons for sticking to hub dynamos and for building a spare winter wheel with one in. You have made your choice and I’m not intentionally questioning it, my post is to potentially help others.

So far I’ve ignored the attractions of hub dynamos and stuck to a simple, easy to fit and inexpensive bottle dynamo; for my limited use bottle dynamos work very well and they can deliver much more utility than I need. If someone else is building a spare dynamo hub wheel that (I assume) isn’t intended to see much use (so something to get them by in the event of an unexpected failure) then it’d be worth considering an alternative. I suggest using an existing plain wheel, fitting a bottle dynamo mounting bracket, and having a matching bottle dynamo ready to add and wire in when needed. YMMV and probably will .
