For anyone in Plymouth who remembers Battery Cycle Works in Embankment road.
Ahead of their time. My local cycle shop. They are still present in Embankment road but have moved to newer premises. https://tradesmansbike.wordpress.com/br ... uth-devon/

Was the name from the building/area, or from recharging wet cells?
Jonathan
From the gun battery deployed on the embankment of the river Plym to defend the city of Plymouth and deter small boats creeping in.
BTW the link is a mine of information with several catalogue's and brochures of Edwardian cycling life.
The shop was run by a Grumpy owner who thought he knew it all. Wore a faded brown coat like Arkwright in Open All Hours with a similar disposition. But his mechanic was a nice chap who looked after us lads.

Not sure if they are still there rjb. As you will be aware they moved from the old shop to the roundabout end of Embankment Road, and at first were at street level. Later they moved downstairs and access was from the back lane running parallel with Embankment Road. I have not been there for years and pretty sure they are sadly, no more.
