Do hard shell pannier boxes exist?

Post by Jenjen82 »

I have an e-bike that I use to commute to work. I have a bag on my rear rack and it is constantly filthy and with it being fabric, it’s a pain to clean.

I’ve seen on mopeds and motorbikes that they have hard shell boxes. Does anybody know of any for a bike that don’t cost a fortune please?

I did find one on amazon but the reviews weren't very good.

Thanks :D

Depends on your definition of "fortune", but yes, they exist, e.g. https://velobin.com/

My wife used to have one on her urban hack bike, it was okay, though she prefers a KLICKfix bar basket these days.

Maybe think out of the box and adapt existing hard shell luggage which can be a lot cheaper .

If what you have in mind is the Velobins linked above.
I have a pair that I used for deliveries, I no longer have a use for them, so they're for sale at about half price (I'll have to investigate postage) if you're interested.

Re: cleaning - my experience with Ortielb roll-tops is that being waterproof they are incredibly easy to clean.
(Might be even easier if they were box-shaped! But it's just a suggestion.)

Other fully waterproof bags exist.

Lockable motorbike top box like this one could be an alternative solution. It's not mine BTW. Mentions of purchasing from Ali express.

Ortlieb "Classic" bags with the smooth finish are indeed a doddle to keep clean (and have other advantages such as having really good fittings and being bombroof). Other waterproof bags, including the Ortlieb "Plus" range with a more textured outer face, can retain grime more easily.

Though being waterproof at all means easy to hose down, how smooth the outer is will affect how much it needs to be done.

Have a look at e-cargo bikes too, you can buy all sorts of cargo spares for them, some of which will fit normal pannier racks.

That looks very interesting -- just wondered about weight comparison to the similarly priced ortliebs I have. For everyday use commuting etc they'd probably be better to use.

I don't have a figure to hand (and she handed them on to someone a while back so I can't measure), but they're not obviously overweight. In the context of everyday commutes where they can live on the bike they're a good solution.

I haven't used one of these, and it is a topbox, not a pannier: https: https://www.tradeinn.com/bikeinn/en/pol ... 37613745/p
