If I can I do tell them, usually springtime in Mallorca when it most often occurs ..... those shorts that have been languishing in a cupboard all winter are pulled out ready for the trip to the spring sunshine.... and yes I would want to know.... Usually I check by stretching them over my splayed hand if I think they are getting a bit tired.... then they get consigned to the 'wear on the turbo' drawer.deeferdonk wrote: 17 Nov 2025, 2:55pmnot always, I won a pair of Road.cc cycling socks in a caption competition. I wore them once to go for a run (user error maybe) and they became holey. I have some nice running socks that i regularly wear for running and cycling that must be over a decade old now with no apparent wear, just colour faded from washing.
and having witnessed on more than one rider over this last year (and have been traumatised by it) some bib shorts don't seem to last forever before going transparent. What's the etiquette? Should you tell a stranger that you can see his bumcrack? Would you want to know if it was you, or finish your ride in ignorance?

Not quite clothing, but I've got a musette from the 1981 BCF National Track Championships at Leicester.
It's still usable but I don't ride the retro scene so it sits at the bottom of a drawer

I still use my CTC musette. Not sure how old that is either.

I’ve still got my first knitted cycle jersey. 4 ply, in Solo superia colours. Knitted by my mother, still intact and I can still get into it! Just can’t breathe very well when wearing it. Circa 1967.

If shoes count I have some Pete Salisbury shoes I bought in 1979. I had heels added so I could walk in them and last used them about 7 years ago on L'eroica.

Gosh that's a name I'd forgotten. Never had a pair myself but I remember a few people in our club had them.gxaustin wrote: 2 Dec 2025, 10:35pm If shoes count I have some Pete Salisbury shoes I bought in 1979. I still have a 'Bring the Games to Birmingham' T-shirt which must date back to 1985 or so.

I had to throw away my Edustar Stelvio shoes recently as the rubber had worn through. They date only from about 2005.
I have a few Rohan tops made of Dunova I bought in the late 80's - they still work as cold weather layering.
From even earlier, probably early 80's, I have a pair of Caldo Goretex fleece-lined mitts with red rubber palms and silver breathable backs. When it gets really cold they still do the stuff. Mostly they are too hot for any distance. All other gloves get used more and wear out fast.

I am NOT a cyclist. I enjoy riding a bike for utility, commuting, fitness and touring on tout terrain Rohloff, Brompton ML3 (2004) and Wester Ross 354 plus a Burley Travoy trailer.

I've just remembered my fur-lined winter cycling shoes. Bought as a student, in the winter of 1978 or 1979. We got from Leeds to Otley and it became clear that my feet weren't going to last the ride even with covers on my toe clips, so I persuaded my fellow-rider to pay for these in Otley Cycles (and paid him back when we got home).
As they are smooth-soled for the toe clips, it's been some decades since I've worn them.

Does a CTC tie and badges from the early 1960s qualify? I wore the tie to a cycling related meeting just last week and brought it to the notice of the group.
I did have a pair of cycle clips until a few months ago which were bought in the mid 1950s . Sadly I've lost one . Trousers in socks now, I'm not proud!
