Marathon HS420 Greenguard vs Marathon HS368

Post by UpWrong »

Does anyone have experience of both. I've been running the old HS368 on my commuter all winter long (and on some trails) and it does impress me. It's a 50 tpi tyre apparently and feels to be strong with robust sidewalls, but the ride is remarkably compliant because of the spring in the tread - the raised sections flexing on the thinner rubber in between. Strikes me that the Greenguard is likely to be very different since it's a 67 tpi tyres with 3mm of rubber under the tread. Should be more p*ncture resistant but what about comfort, speed and grip?

hmm my Marathon HS368 says up to 65 psi? I have a pair now done about 2000 miles and barely worn. I too would like to hear the pros and cons. But really academic as the HS368 is not made any more, so unless u stockpile a few u have no choice? A reviewer I read some where reckoned the green guard replacement didnt roll as well and the one previous to the HS368 better still. I read also they had as a target e-bikes....

Well, there are plenty of other manufacturer's offerings to consider. Good point about psi. I have the 622x37 ERTO size and run 55 psi front and 70 rear. Are you sure it's 65 psi max and not 85 max?

Thanks for the link. So the opinion seems to be that it's a lighter form of the Marathon Plus. I was wondering if there is any difference in elasticity between the green guard and the blue guard. Who knows? The M Plus seems to polarise opinion. Some tests show it rolls well at high pressures but comfort suffers.

I have the green guard at the mo and I love them. I found the blue guard 'dead' feeling...b

By all accounts the HS420 is stiffer than the HS368,we used to run HS308 and latterly HS368 on the tandems, but switched (due to the HS368 not lasting)to Panaracer Ribmo's a great tyre that rolls better and is more puncture resistant than the Schwalbes.
Nowadays I wouldn't look further than Vittoria Randonneur Pro or Randonneur and Voyger* Hypers,by far better tyres in all respects than the Schwalbes and more comfortable than the Ribmos.
The Ribmos and Vittorias are available with folding Kevlar beads too, making them great for carrying spares on tour and lighter than wire beaded tyres.
Planet X have the Vittorias at unbelievable prices ATM,don't let the price put you off, these are very high quality tyres at knock down prices :) :-

I've no connection with Planet X just a very happy Vittoria user :)

*Voyager and Randonneur Hypers are the same tyre.

I think the HS420 is more puncture resistant and may have a slightly lower Crr. I've not tried them back to back on the same bike though.

Schwalbe claim that the green layer is more elastic than the blue layer and that this lowers the Crr of tyres so fitted.

BTW if you think the tread is flexing much, this is probably adding to the Crr significantly.

If you are not worried too much about Crr then the 'road plus' tyre is good value and seems reasonably comfortable in 38mm form.

cheers

I have the Marathon HS368 on my Brompton, done 2,000 miles on them so far with the rear showing slight wear and the front hardly any. I have also had 26 x 1.75 fitted on my Surly Disc Trucker with 1,500 miles so far. I like their resilience - I haven't had any problems so far but I really don't like the comfort or lack of it on the Disc Trucker so I have just changed to Continental Sport Contact and what a difference! 35 mile ride today without any of the unpleasant jarring that I had with the Marathons.

I will be keeping the Marathons on the Brompton but I am sold on the Sport Contact (so far) for the DT :-)

We now have the Schwalbe Green Marathon HS620.

Have bought a pair in 44-584. Not fitted yet. The sidewalls seem stiff.

It's been around for 2 years or so.

Here is it's rolling resistance review which also compares it to the old Greenguard (which got surprisingly good review back in 2015). They reckon it's probably about the same as Greenguard as comparing slightly different sizes.
