My 12 yo grandson wants to see what my Myford lathe is used for.
After a bit of thought I will get him to turn a Whistle from a length of dowel. Not ideal to use a Myford ML7 for wood turning but it's a nice simple introduction with a nice outcome for him.
Here's my trial run. It's surprisingly loud and has a nice pitched tone. I'm glad he'll take it home with him, unlikely to hear it as he's 50 miles away.

Murdering trees and spoiling their wood - where wood I be without this saviour of sanity in a world going mad at an accelerating rate? Perhaps posting swivel-eyed loon-tic rants to antisocial meejah or even running amok with an axe! (I have seven, at the last count, all ever so sharp).
After the bout of obsessive and very satisfying carving of the spoonery and such, I turned (har har) to the lathe. "I'll make bowls and that", I says to meself. "This will a fine excuse to buy another few dozen tools then play with them." So I did.
It's a steep learning curve, with tons to learn that cabinetmaking didn't teach me. It's taken (most of) my mind from the madness and rot of civilisation happening all over the place now. Turning is quick; and produces very regular things that are reassuring ..... unlike some o' them carved spoons and bowls that look like things a goblin might employ to hold fairy soup and to slurp at it greedily.
Pics of this and that follow. I hope to gradually improve my turning skills and hence the things produced. I still favours the things of utility over decorative gew-gaws (all too prominent in turning circles these days). Perhaps wooden bicycle rims can be turned?
Anyone else do the turnings? Post pics plis.
