Advice on new 650b / 27.5' wheels for MTB

Post by Bice »

I don't know anything about MTBs, but enjoy riding my Scott Scale 730 with thru axle 650b wheels and tubeless on trails.

I have a pair of Schwalbe One Allround gravel tyres on at present, which are excellent on summer trails, and fast on tarmac: on which I did the West Kernow Way last summer.

But I also have a pair of knobbly Specialized Ground Control 58-584 (27.5 x 2.3), which would be useful in the wet now.

The wheels I am using are Scott's own brand Syncros 27.5 x23, so 23mm wide.

I am wanting to get another pair of wheels for the knobbly tyres because changing tyres with tubeless is a total pain IMO.

Any idea where I can get some equivalent, low cost wheels?

There are these (below) on eBay, but the rims are 35mm wide. I think these wheels are for serious MTB-ers and perhaps heavier than what I have. I don't need really strong wheels suited for Cwmbran Forest etc. That sort of riding is too hard core for me.

I think the wheels would fit. But another pair of exactly the same Syncros wheels that I already have would be fine. Or an alternative that is equally light. The joy of this bike is that it is very light for an off-roader, which means I don't covet a gravel bike.

These Madspeed 7 wheels are 21mm internal width, weigh 1.7kg for the pair and, while a little narrow for 58mm, will work: https://madspeed7.co.uk/products/high-e ... ightweight . I suggest you contact them and see what else they can offer. I found them helpful.

The Shimano GRX WH-570 (internal width 22mm) was made in 650B but has been discontinued. An alternative is getting wheels built using Kinlin TL-23 or TL-25R rims.

Have you looked at Hunt Trail Wide wheels? They come in multiple configurations, the minimum tyre width is 2.25” and they start at around £350 for a new set but the reviews are great, particularly as a performance upgrade to most OEM and they appear pretty bombproof

These Hunt wheels are a fair price at the current discount offer of £384 given the relatively low weight https://www.huntbikewheels.com/products ... c-wheelset. 25mm internal width and claim to work well with up to 65mm tyres.

You are probably best looking at rims that are 25-30mm internal width .I am running some WTB rims with an internal 30mm width but regularly do red and black routes. They are hardwork uphill on fire roads so internals of 25mm would be better.
Also your 27.5's will be lighter than my 29's.
