ICE TRIKE TANDEM or what else is a possibility?

Post by PAB855 »

As time passes and we become less able we have to think of the future.

That's why I'm trying to be one jump ahead in the pedalling world.

My wife and I in the not too distant future could require something different. I may not be able to drive the car because of my poorer eyesight and my wife's ability to concentrate on where she's going on her trike, isn't getting any better so car assisted trips with our bike and trike will be no more.

I've also recently had to change to an ICE trike as well which I am enjoying immensely.

What I'm thinking of looking for or at least finding out about is an ICE trike tandem, which in a way even if it costs a fortune will replace the car. This will mean I will know we're both going the same way and communicating with each other will be better too!

The ICE website doesn't appear to list them on their pricelist and they look as if they're as scarce as hen's teeth. It would have to be e assisted as well so hit me with it!

I've an excellent source of help via Laidbackbikes in Edinburgh and will probably be relying on them once again for help, but this is my first foray into the unknown and this forum has been a source of much help in the past, so, bring it on, please.

Cheers

This member has one so may be worthwhile contacting him for help. He's been quiet on the forum since last year but still cycling as he passed me a few weeks ago.

Did you have a Kettwiesel before? My wife and I had a couple and found the “tandem” mode very versatile. Much more manageable on the road than a standard tandem bike, it retains most of the Kettwiesel’s tiny turning circle, and we could still fit them inside our estate car.

The ICE tandem trike being sold by DTek looks like a lovely machine which might suit you. Why not go and give it a try? I bought our solo trikes from DTek and he was very helpful.
Any tandem recumbent trike will be very heavy so you either need to gear it very low or add electric assistance unless you are very fit or only going to cycle in flat areas. We chose to fit a Bafang mid motor which only just squeezes into the frame under the stoker’s bottom bracket, but a rear hub motor might be a good alternative.
We love our trike, but only use it when the roads are reasonably dry to avoid getting sprayed by passing cars.
You can also sometimes find Greenspeed recumbent tandems which are a bit cruder than the ICEs but can do the job. For reasons I won’t go into I would avoid Kinetics.

Tandem trikes are long… so def see before you buy.

But a pair of ketts might be a good option - you can split up and ride side by side when the going is appropriate, and hook up to ride line astern as and when you want/need.

The length might not be an issue if you’re not looking to use a car to get anywhere…

Many thanks for that information. I would love to try the DTech trike, but I'm rather far away West Lothian) and no longer travel long distances, besides I've had excellent service from Laidbackbikes in Edinburgh and will almost certainly be needing their help, however the dealers all appear to know one another so if there's a machine out there, I'm sure they'll know about it. We too are both delighted with our e assist ICE ADVENTURE trikes from David Gardener.

I'm sure I've been in contact with DTech, maybe they bought a back wheel from me, in any case I found them very pleasant to deal with.

Thanks again, I'm in no hurry, just at the beginning of information gathering until the optician says the dreaded words .

Laidback and Dtek might be able to arrange a transfer - though it would undoubtedly cost you freight…

Get Cycling had an ex demo Bambuk a while ago. Might be worth asking if they still have it? still pretty pricey but there may be a deal to do.

There's now an ICE tandem listed in FB marketplace for £3000. Located Newport, South Wales. I suggest you get down there and take a look asap if you are seriously considering one. Pairing a couple of Kettwiesels also has merits, but if you have preference for a fixed tandem then that ICE is a must to go see.

Not many recumbent tandems at all on the market ,they are rare ,tandem recumbent trike are even rarer, so when they come up ,you got to grab the chance .
A good Chat with Kevin at DTEK is you best bet, but he his hard to get in contact with.
The Kettwiesel is probably the best thing to look into,at the least you both have ICE ,trikes to trade with
It's a long shot but you could try contacting AZUB in Czech republic, they can do one offs, they do build a tandem recumbent ,but not a trike as yet.
A laid back, low down, layabout recumbent triker!

Kinetics do the "Duplex" custom build from £5995, https://www.kinetics-online.co.uk/recum ... -tricycle/

Since you are in Scotland, you have the opportunity to deal with him fact-to-face.

Your ideas and suggestions are exactly what I was wanting, otherwise there's no easy way to find out what's out there.

The German made machine looks like an engineering masterpiece,

Nobody has yet suggested a Van Raam adult trike.

I'm looking into it because my wife can no longer be relied on to know where she's going and can only use her trike on closed off parks or a local cycle circuit, but we have to get there by car. If my driving days do end possibly by the end of this year, this Van Raam could mean we can leave directly from the back door through the back gate and I know the only thing she needs to do is pedal ! We wouldn't need to have any special footwear or make sure our pockets are zipped up. We could return to doing short local runs more frequently with the minimum of faff before we can set off ie the way they do it in the Netherlands?

The one worry might be its stability. With the advantage of being only about 76cm wide, sitting more upright comes the disadvantage of a higher C of G.

I'm looking further into this possibility but have an open mind .
