It becomes a world tour is when it's too long to carry all your prescription drugs.
Enjoy Sri Lanka it's a fascinating place. As a cyclist you'll find it a very 2 tiered country between local and tourist facilities.
When does a day trip become a world tour?

I think my month tour in Sri Lanka may be starting to become a world tour as my flights back are cancelled due the Iran war…..

Sorry Andy. I hope you’re stranded in Sri Lanka rather than Dubai and you get home soon.AndyB1 wrote: 3 Mar 2026, 12:36pm I think my month tour in Sri Lanka may be starting to become a world tour as my flights back are cancelled due the Iran war…..

Andy - start cycling the other way around - via Australia, the USA, and Europe.
You know this makes sense, and would only take a year or so.
Happy Days!

Does it make any difference to travel insurance ?AndyB1 wrote: 3 Mar 2026, 12:36pm I think my month tour in Sri Lanka may be starting to become a world tour as my flights back are cancelled due the Iran war…..
That question applies to your original question and your situation now.

If you run the risk of 'overstaying' your travel insurance then notify them.
It's pretty much like COVID. They should extend but may charge.
Sri Lanka We're quick out of the blocks and immediately announced an open-ended extension to the visa (ETA), so at least that's one thing you don't have to worry about.
I'm in similar situation in Thailand. Not scheduled home for 3½ weeks so who knows by then. I'm worried about getting shunted onto an bike unfriendly airline if my luggage allowance doesn't get carried over.

My Travel insurance automatically continues until I get back (Sportscover Direct) so that is OK snd Sri Lanka have given 14 day visa extensions which just covers me.
The media are saying Gulf flights now running but I don’t think all are by any means

You may need to rebook your flight . They are prioritising people earliest affected.
You can check departures each day on airline website.
For example, Emirates usually have 4 flights a day from Bangkok to Dubai. Currently only running 2. Plus backlog from no flight period means a lot of people to accommodate.

Re: When does a day trip become a world tour?
Thanks Simon. When my Emirates flight was cancelled I rebooked with Air India so a direct flight Delhi to London. As it is a direct flight it can route away from the Middle East and their flights have not been effected
I think any flights with a Gulf based airline will be tricky as they have to fly via their home base to refuel, maintenance etc and as you say they need to clear a backlog…..difficult when not at 100% capacity. Better I am in Sri Lanka a little longer than stuck in Dubai airport!

Re: When does a day trip become a world tour?
I flew back to the UK from Bangalore on a direct flight with Air India the other day. There was a 1-hour delay in take-off and another hour added on to the journey time to account for the route diversion - otherwise business as usual.
