Paris Roubaix

Post by MrsHJ »

Excellent race although lots of mechanicals- I want them both to win!

Couple of tears- WVA is a competitor I always want to see win.

Great races, both worthy winners. I had wanted MV to win the ladies' race after her recent bereavement but Chapeau! to Koch.

Only watched the mens. It was a race for the ages!
Wout, Wout, Wout! 😀
Pogi's time will come, I think. But he needs a couple more years and a few more of Mrs Miggins' pies before he's strong enough to finish the job.
Btw, Wout, Wout, Wout! 😀

Yes, I think Pog can win this race. Matthieu took 3 goes, and that was with a career of cobbles racing and CX behind him (plus it's the perfect race for him).

But I would bet against Pog ever winning the 5 Monuments. Probably ..

The problem is that there’s no hill for Pog to drop everyone on. He tried mightily hard to drop Wout on the cobbles and on the tarmac, but Wout hung on and Pog wasn’t going to beat him in the sprint.

Van der Poel had mighty bad luck, punctured twice in Arenberg and a messed up bike change with Phillipsen, meant a 2 minute gap to close. He got back to within 30 seconds of the lead but couldn’t get back to the front.

Great to see Wout win it.

Defeat snatched from the jaws of victory in the women’s race. 2 Vismas and 1 FDJ in the lead group and the FDJ rider Franzi Koch wins the sprint.

I think he can do it and I wouldn’t bet against him but I agree it’s not a sure thing.

This winter he spent lots of time in San Remo training on and learning the Poggio so that he was better than Pidcock descending it. So I’m guessing he’ll be spending a lot of time in northern France in the off season this year. He’ll learn and relearn the most difficult sectors and I bet he’ll spend some time working on his velodrome techniques and working in his body strength too. If I were him I’d also be spending time with the mechanics and team figuring out if it’s possible to get fewer punctures/mechanicals for this particular race without losing too much speed.

I'm not sure it was that bad, PFP was pretty much toast by the velodrome compared to the other two and MV has missed several races to be at home with her ailing dad who'd died the previous week which isn't exactly ideal preparation.
