Thanks. I've never felt the need for these, didn't know of their existence until recently. Don't they reduce the extent of the pedal spindle engaging with the cranks?

Many thanks to the other respondents, too. All much appreciated.
Pedals will only gouge into the cranks if the contact area isn't round - ie if theflat area for the spanner extends fully to the end and contacts the alloy of the cranks; only usually a feature on very cheap pedals.

Even pedal spindles with a round contact surface will gouge…….perhaps not as bad as pedals with the spanner flat extending to the end. Maybe that is why pedal washers exist, and why people who don’t use them seem to have difficulty undoing pedals?

... maybe! Never had problems before, but it was a 2 month tour, my 2nd longest.

I'll try to remember to loosen the pedals halfway through, and a day or two before boxing the bikes.

And yes, will order some washers!

Thanks all.

I lent my bike to my son, to take to a training camp in Mallorca. Bike partly disassembled and fitted in a soft bike bag. I don’t know what he did, but when getting the bike ready for the return journey, he couldn’t get one of the pedals off, so had to pack the bike with the pedal on. To this day, I’ve not been able to remove the pedal from the crank. Luckily, I’ve got a spare crank of the same make and the right length, so was able to swap it out when I got the bike back. Look Delta pedal and Campag Veloce crank.
