Sell, break & sell or re-purpose?

I have a 10 year old Bird Zero MTB which has less than 1000km of use. It's currently set up as a turbo trainer for my wife but she has little to no interest in using it.

I broke my right thumb not long after getting the bike and, now, I struggle to have long periods using thumb push gear changers, to the extent I don't want to ride it.

So it's time to do something with it. The question is, what?

I have repurposed the rear wheel (650b) to my Shand tourer/gravel so that I can simply swap wheels between touring (I run 700c) and gravel riding. The front wheel is available and has less than 1000km on it - it is 15mm axle whilst my gravel bike is 12mm so I couldn't re-purpose it.

It's a 2x10 using Shimano SLX kit. The frame is as new.

If I sell it I'd be selling it without a rear wheel. So what's it worth?

I suspect I could probably get more if I broke it down and sold the SLX Groupset, fork, wheel and frame separately? Any thoughts?

If I could work out a way to re-purpose the groupset with a new/used gravel frame I'd be tempted to set it up as a dedicated gravel leaving my Shand as a road/tourer. From online searching I realises that SLX and GRX are not interchangeable due to the pull ratios on the RD. Any thoughts on an alternative to repurpose the groupset and have drop bar shifters?

Presumably if I sell it eBay would be the best when I have no idea of its value.

When faced with a similar option for my son, a hardtail with worn-out Deore 1x12, and a want for a gravel and utility bike rather than a refurb of the MTB, I pondered multiple ways of re-using parts, and ended-up not doing so except for saddle and bars.

We got a steel-framed tourer at a bargain price, and made that into a flat-bar gravelly sort of bike instead. The various parts of the MTB went to the bike charity, and a guy at our local tip who creates bikes out of bits, who wanted the bare frame and forks. We could have ebayed the bits instead.

Our logic was that a less fancy 9sp drivetrain would be cheaper to keep going in the long run, and I’ve kept the 9sp brifters it came with, so it can go back to drops for a couple of hours work. At least at 9sp everything is compatible with pretty much everything else.

If you sell the bike the buyer will want the rear wheel too.

Whether breaking or selling as a whole bike if you sell on eBay then being willing to post it will make a massive difference to the price.

If the real reason you don’t use it is down to the gear shifter then try (again?) to change the shifter to what works for you.

Sometimes what to do for the best is both unclear and mostly down to chance.

Of the options expressed my order of preference would be: repurpose, sell whole, break. I’ve gifted reasonable bikes to charity, a bit of social payback and thanks - on my part - for one I bought from a cycle re-cycle scheme decades ago.

You will always get most cash by breaking it, but it takes a level of effort to photograph and post it. You will end up with some worthless bits left over, typically bars, stem etc.

Used bike values have collapsed, so have low expectations. Buy a decent wheel for your other bike and sell it whole will be the way for minimal hassle.

It's worth bugger all even complete. Old spec, non trendy wheel size unless it is really small, not a big name. Use it for something else. Pub bike? Odd ball gravel bike. Trike conversion kit on it.
