They are old school now. The Premium brands (MAAP, PNS and SYN) that charge £200-£300 for a jersey and £300 for a pair of bib shorts are what the cool kids are wearing. Though why you would want ride around with PNS in large letters on your jersey and shorts, I don’t know. (PNS stands for Pas Normal Studio apparently)

I know the brands but had not realised the prices were that high. I do have a pair of Castelli winter bibs, they're not that great actually IMO. Wearing them neither encourages nor discourages me from waving at anyone.

When I'm out on the bike then most oncoming sports cyclists acknowledge my presence, usually with a slight hand gesture. Few people actually speak, and if they do they're probably a "normal cyclist" on a shopping bike.

I always respond with a few words, something like "hi there", which is less effort for me than making a gesture.

I ride in East Anglia. I suspect oncoming sports cyclists (people on road bikes and cycling clothes) are more likely to acknowledge me if I'm on a road bike myself (rather than on my Brompton).

This is when I'm out in the countryside. When I'm cycling through towns (like Cambridge where I live) then if I greeted every cyclist it would be like the scene in the film "Crocodile Dundee", where country yokel Mick Dundee boards a New York subway train and immediately introduces himself, and offers a handshake, to each of the other passengers.

I'm one of the 'cycling club of old' who likes to engage with any riders. Today, I was left wondering, when I greeted a rider coming towards me, and his response was 'where's your helmet?'
What is it about people (it seems 'lately'... maybe post-covid era effect?) that means they can judge or instruct total strangers? My head - my choice (I hope this doesn't start a helmet debate - that's for a different thread ). During my ride I encountered several other cyclists, and one group of about 8 on MTB's, and all were pleasant, which was heartening. Then, as I was proceeding down a narrow lane about 8 miles from home, doing 20MPH, a truck and a van were following behind, and there was no possibility of me pulling over. They didn't harass me, but a driver coming the other way in a smart Triumph TR6 pulled into a pssing space on his side and yelled "let them pass" out of his window! As it happened about 50 yards later, I was able to do that. Why did he think his shout was ok? If (by some miracle) I'd been able to let them pass earlier, maybe they'd have been going at 30MPH, and would have met him where there was no passing space, and his polished car would have been somewhat squashed....... What is up with people?

I don't discriminate I've been known to wave at the odd horse whether it has a helmet on or not cos you never know when you need it's expertise setting the derailer up at the side of the road.

I'll happily greet another cyclist - but on occasion I'm on a poor stretch of road and I'm wary of potholes.
At least I give the benefit of doubt.
