We have one of each model of controller/display.

The current (!) one has USB-C recharging. And displays speed and trip mileage and distance.This meant that my wife didn't need a little bike computer anymore. You do need the keep the battery (not the assistance) switched ON for these to work.

I guessed a trip counter is the obvious upgrade. The old model uses a CR2032 disc battery. Sometimes the battery contacts need a clean or a jog to get them going again.

I received a Boost kit last week and have begun to try it out. I have previously used 3 other eBike systems*, so my thoughts my help others decide whether or not the Boost system is for them. I fitted the system to a Ribble Titanium gravel bike.

I have now run down the battery from 100% to (almost) 0% and covered a total of 82 km , including 1400m of climbing (this is in Cornwall, so more climbing per km than average, I suspect). I'm a reasonably fit rider, and don't really need an eBike for day trips, but for touring with luggage (especially in hot weather) I need it as I'm getting old.

Other systems with the same battery capacity have achieved around 2000m of climbing per charge, over 100km of riding. The Boost unit was set in 'eco' mode throughout my test. This differs from other systems I tried because normally I don't use the motor on flat sections -unless there's a nasty headwind. With the Boost I don't have the remote handlebar control so couldn't keep on switching the power on and off (the phone app is pretty useless for this). So, I reckon the range of Boost is similar to other 250W-h systems. 'Eco' mode, together with my own effort got me up all hills as steep as 13%, but I didn't make a 20% gradient. I will try it again in Boost mode,

The reason I am trying a Boost is that, for touring, it makes more sense to me than a bike with a built-in battery. This is because it's very difficult to charge an eBike at a B&B unless you can remove the battery. A range-extender battery would help, but then you're effectively carrying around the weight (and cost) of the internal battery without really using it. (The Fazua system is removable, but I found it awkward and just didn't get on with the bike. And I see now that Fazua are ceasing production). There are touring bikes with removable batteries, but they are all big and heavy - I wouldn't be able to lift one of those into a train etc, or up and down steps one often finds on long trips.

I found that fitting the Boost motor wheel was a bit of a headache, and the instructions weren't great. (I'm pretty experienced at maintenance). I purchased the thru-axle version, and I'm still worried about having to remove the wheel if /when I need to change the tube at the roadside. There are small parts that could easily get lost.
I'm also concerned about the lack of waterproofing. They do sell a rain cover ('for winter riding') but that will be added faff.

Overall, once fitted, the system works pretty well and looks very neat with its near-absence of cables.

Although I haven't had long-term ownership experience of any e-bike system other than Fazua, I did choose (and repeat the choice twice) Fazua e-bikes because of their - to me - obvious convenience, ease of use/charging and their availability in the three lightweight e-bikes now in our household. One is a racy thing; one a gravel/winter bike thing and the third has fitments allowing it to claim ability as a tourer thing. They weigh 13.5kg, 16.5kg and 15.0 kg respectively, before clagging on additions such as racks, panniers and mudguards.

They all work as an ordinary bike when the motor and battery unit is removed, which takes about 3 seconds, with another 3 seconds to put in an empty container module (although it can take a minute to pre-load that empty module with cake and a waterproof).

So I'm interested to hear what you found "awkward" about Fazua and what of it's nature you didn't get on with. Personally I find it allows the bikes that it's in to be used and maintained just as easily as an identical non-motored bike of the same type. So far I've not come across another e-bike system with anywhere near the convenience, ease of use and effectiveness for a cyclist who doesn't want huge torque, batteries that last forever and lots of queer parts/wiring inclined to go phut without a replacement being available.

No doubt the Boost and other systems have their merits and will suit many ..... but on paper, at least, none seem to appeal as much as the Fazua, to me at least.

Sadly, Porsche have binned their development of the Fazua system. Happily the spares, which are of very good quality and easily user-installable, will continue to be be made and marketed. Not that even the now eight year old Fazua-equipped bike has ever needed any yet.

Great write-up, thanks for sharing.

Our experience is upthread and is very similar. So I'll concentrate on a few points that you've raised:

We did buy their rain covers. They're £20. It wouldn't be hard to make or adapt something to fit.

We did buy their controllers: one of the old type and one of the new. And that probably led to the biggest difference: we had assistance turned OFF nearly all of the time.

And I didn't find it easy to fit the wheel the first time. I did check with Boost a couple of times and got good support. I eventually did it with someone else spreading the fork a bit. But now that I know what goes where and that it will go in it's not a problem. I haven't had to do it on a dark wet road yet! (My not-quite-resolved-yet experience with doing this on an Orbea Gain D20 is in another thread.)

My aluminium e-gravel bike weighed nearly 17kg. I didn't like the clunky effect of the clutch disengaging often when changing gears. I found the combined motor/battery unit quite heavy to manhandle (my partner also has a Fazua bike and she dropped the unit onto her toe, causing it- the toe - to break). Her unit also malfunctioned and needed a firmware upgrade and reboot to get it working again, My unit developed an electrical fault (kept cutting out) which needed dealer intervention.
The motor arrangement can't be as efficient as hub motors or in-line bottom bracket motors. Having to transfer the torque through 90 degrees looses some power. As per the rise of FWD vehicles to avoid this?

The Fazua motor doesn't disengage when one changes gears. Any clunk is due to the chain being under strain from the power input of the motor when the gear is changed. It's easy to set the motor ramp up/down times to avoid this via the same procedure one adopts to avoid changing-clunks when there's no motor in the bike - momentarily stop putting heavier efforts into the chain in favour of just enough to keep the chain turning so the gear can change smoothly.

The motor/battery unit weighs about 3.5 kg. It fits the thumb & forefinger grip of one hand easily, unless one has very small hands. Is that too heavy and awkward to learn how to deal with? I suppose so for some. But then so is changing a light bulb or mending a puncture. :-)

A firmware update rarely gets made to fix faults but rather to improve performance. I've updated my Fazua firmware twice, on all three bikes, via the USB connection to a computer, with no issue. It worked just as well before each update as after it.

Like all bike components, e-motors and their parts need to be cleaned and maintained. One of the Fazua bikes did have an issue (after 7 years use) with losing power before the battery indicated full depletion but it was fixed by a clean of the various connections inside the battery and a cell rebalancing, all accessible via the screwed-together battery casing. Another bike had a cut out of power one cold winter day, fixed by removing the battery for a wipe of some condensation that had frozen on the battery-to-motor connector.

One can easily avoid dealer-fixes (and their large charges) by learning basic maintenance procedures for bicycle bits and pieces, including e-motors and batteries. I think I've had two of my bikes fixed twice by a dealer, in 66 years of cycling. Three times, mind, if one counts the cleaning and cell-rebalancing mentioned above - done by a qualified electrician rather than me ,,, although I've since learnt how to do it myself.

The various efficiencies of power transfer in the different e-bike motor designs is a complex thing. No doubt they all absorb some of the motor power in the transmission arrangements to a degree. Some types of motor are very efficient at some rev-rates and power-production points and less so at others. For example, hub motors are generally not as efficient as mid-motors at low speeds - which tends to be the sort of speed when one needs a motor most, such as when going up steep hills.

Still, for many cyclists a motor and peripherals need to be as simple and maintenance-free as possible, since many cyclists are rather modern and don't want to be involved with the technicalities, preferring a black box that "just works". Is the Boost system a simpler and more robust system, in this regard, than a Fazua or any other e-bike motor system? One feels that any such comparison will have results dependent on the cyclists using the various motor systems ..... but more objective measurements could possibly be made.

Porsche apparently abandoned e-bikes altogether "to concentrate on their core business of making motor cars". They abandoned their own e-bike motor productions as well as those of Fazua, which they bought some years ago. I doesn't seem to have happened because of any particular issue with the Fazua design.
