He has been known to suggest something similar as a mouth wash.

I actually cleaned a chain that way last week!!

Trouble is I mis-remembered the details and used an old shampoo bottle out of our recycling bin.

The chain went in okay, but after it had been all shook up - like you do - it had kinda tied itself in knots - like I knew it would if I'd thought about it first. So rather than become my handy chain-cleaning bottle, it went back into the recycling with its top cut off!

Its SB who recommends a coke bottle,. I use an old plastic squash bottle. The chain does get tied in knots but once you've got the end you can persuade it out by judicious jiggling and shaking. We don't eat jam, but I'll try and get a jar of pickles finished ASAP!

I'm a convert to the Gunk (the smell don't half linger by the way) and have invested in a half gallon can for my fleet. However I have just finished my bottle of Finish Line and have purchased (at great expense) a bottle of White lightning clean ride (my aunt used to drink a similarly named beverage and had to stop as she became addicted!). So far I am not impressed. Yes it keeps the chain clean but after a wet 20 mile ride on Sunday followed by a quick rinse down with the hose, when I came to lube the chains (its a tandem) on Monday, the rust had already started to form. This never happened with the finish line. This means that I would have to WD40 the chain after a wet ride, somewhat defeating the benefits of the WL!

Any advice Mick?

Use an old jam or sauce jar with a tight fitting lid with a wide neck, like these:-

I use White spirit for the cleaning cycle and hotish water with washing up liquid in for the rinse cycle.

Does anyone else use an old spoke to fish their chain out of the bottle?

Good idea!

I use anything that comes to hand - screwdriver, pliers, spanner.........

A spoke is a brilliant idea, nice hook on the end.
