Lightweight headset spanners
Re: Lightweight headset spanners
Dunno about your headset, TheBrick, but mine only needs one.
The bearing nut can be done by hand, and the locknut is tightened with a spanner. The two nuts are separated by a pegged washer so the turning force isn't transferred.
If you want two spanners, that's fine as well!
Just say.

Re: Lightweight headset spanners
I amended my previous post but 2x 32mm for me please.
Re: Lightweight headset spanners
I'd like one, but I need to measure up when I get home. I'll post the size this evening.
Re: Lightweight headset spanners
If it's not too late to improve the design: please omit most of the handle and laser cut an 8mm socket in the remaining stub. Now that would be lightweight.

Re: Lightweight headset spanners
I'll be busy (even more!) over the next few days, but I'll probably see Paul later today ....... we'll chat about timescales. I'm keeping a list of sizes and orders.
CJ. Good idea, but for the sake of simplicity, we'll stick with this design.

Re: Lightweight headset spanners
As it's too windy to ride safely, and too wet to tidy the wind debris in the garden, I've been catching up with the forum. Reading this thread prompted me to measure my threaded head sets, six in all. Three of them are 32mm; one is 32mm locknut, 33mm bearing cap; and one 32mm locknut, 41mm bearing cap. (The other is a Koga Miyata with a proprietary fitting needing a special tool. The only times I've needed to adjust it, I used stilsons - crude but effective!)
This leads me to ask:
1. Are the two odd sizes usual?
2. Can Paul cut to these sizes?
3. I note also that Paul's drawing shows little nibs at front of the jaws. Won't this stop the spanner sliding in under the front brake hanger?
If the answer to 2. is 'yes', please can I order 2No. 32mm spanners, 1No. 33mm and1No. 41mm. If 'no', please make that 3No. 32mm (I can file/grind one down to 33mm.)

Re: Lightweight headset spanners
Hi Mike,
I'm sure your requirements are fine.
As for the "nubs" - it was Paul's idea, and a good one I think. The problem is, though, you may want to slide on the spanner, as you quite rightly say.
Having said that it's a good idea, I've never had a problem with a headset spanner slipping - except for using big adjustables in the past!
What do people think about the nubs?
Do you want them?
For the record:
So far,
30mm x1
32mm x9
33mm x1
36mm x2
41mm x1
I'm sure your requirements are fine.

Re: Lightweight headset spanners
I cant see a problem with the nubs from my point of view, but if people don't want them I'm not fussed. I'm sure they'd be easy enough to file off if required.

I agree. Also, wouldn't the "nubs" allow you to let go of the spanner without it dropping off?
Re: Lightweight headset spanners
Saw Paul last evening. We had a chat, and all's fine. The nub idea can always be filed off as required, so we'll go ahead with them.
We'll close the books on the ordering by midweek, and I'll get the list to him.
I've sent this link to him so he can see the chat about the spanners, and as an advert for him, here's his website:

Thanks guys!

Re: Lightweight headset spanners
Relatively new round here. After a loose headset/juddering tandem fork incident during this summers tour, I'll be taking headset spanners with me from now on.....
To that end, may I have 2x32mm's please if I'm not too late? How would you like paying?
The big muther Park tools are just a bit on the heavy side for taking out with us

Re: Lightweight headset spanners
Mick,
I'd like to order a 32mm which I assume will fit my bikes (standard threaded headsets). I tried to buy a headset spanner from my LBS who said "not much call for these around here!" or words to that effect and at £15 a go are quite expensive so this looks to be perfect.
Many thanks
Chris
