Is there going to be cross toasting at the dinner?"

Post by Philip Benstead »

Dear Friends

I sent an email to David Robinson Chair of the CTC Council

"David

Is there going to be cross toasting at the dinner?"

His reply

"Not discussed it but I hope not"

I believe that cross toast if done well, is entertaining and harmless

I found last year Dinner without cross toast without it so boring I left early

Speech of Self-Congratulations a real turn off,

IMHO WE NEED HUMOUR

Cross toasting is a tradition at CTC Annual Dinners, so why ask?

I assume his reply
"Not discussed it but I hope not"
means he will discuss with the members attending the dinner, in any case just stand up and do it because if you don't the precedent will have been set and another CTC Tradition will be lost

I have no problems with cross-toasting - or a lack of it... What I could definitely do without are the inordinately long speeches.

You can always tell the politicians at such events...

In our house it happens if the toaster has been unplugged or turned off because the thing that holds the toast won't stay down. OTOH, I suppose if it did stay down and the electricity was off, I'd be even crosser. Sorry, just realised, that's cross non-toasting

Yeah, the switch mechanism on a Dualit toaster leads to that when it's left on the "non normal" mode of 1 slice only to toast!

To get back to the OP ... I wonder how the dinner will go if the NO vote has it ? ... almost worth getting a ticket in the hope of finding out

This sounds like the type of behaviour which can make cyclists appear like a bunch of anorak wearing wiggins.I would prefer to avoid such events, and find the whole thing trivial and boorish.

So for the uninitiated, is anyone going to explain what this thread's about?

THE NATIONAL CLARION CYCLING CLUB MAGAZINE
wrote:
Cross toasting may be
unique to cycling clubs,
but of this I am not sure.
Googling its origins brings
information about toasters,
wedding toasts and even
fountain pens, but nothing
of any real use for the
Clarionista.
I first saw cross
toasting at the Bolton
Clarion 100th
anniversary dinner: a
diner (probably Merlin
Evans) stood up, placed a
booted and spurred foot on
his chair, and declared that
he wished to ‘Take wine
with anyone who wore
boots and spurs’. Since
then I have seen cross
toasting flourish at
Clarion dinners.
Cross toasting is
fellowship and one
upmanship, a way of telling
all of some feat you have
performed, and sharing
with others who’ve done the
same; riding the end to end;
breaking the hour for a 25;
shaking hands with Fidel
Castro; all have been
celebrated as cross toasts
at National Clarion dinners.
Long may it continue, it is
certainly more entertaining
than long turgid speeches!

Hypocacculus, thanks for this definitive reference.

As the person who started this question, I understand the powers that be, KM who acts as MC at CTC dinners does not like cross toasting.

Cross toasting. needs to be done well; unfortunately the numbers of raconteur in the CTC are getting fewer

A SOME TIME CROSS TOASTER

I didn't realise this company/charity feud had got to the state where people are burning crosses at the Annual Dinner
