waterproof Panniers?

what is better: a fully water proof Pannier, or a non water proof bag with a plastic liner?

I prefer the waterproof liner method.

Amongst other things the panniers get very filthy and it is nicer to leave them out on the bike and bring the inner bags alone into your tent.

I prefer waterproof panniers. (I really mean rainproof, rather than submersible.)

There is less faff when putting things in or taking them out. Water runs off them, so doesn't add weight to the bike. When water gets into non-waterproof panniers, the inner bag can be sitting in a pool of water, and that's when you discover the inner bag isn't fully waterproof.

Ortlieb gets my vote. Less fuss.

+ 1 for waterproofs... used to use bin-liners in all the non-waterproof panniers that preceded the Ortliebs, which kind-of worked OK, except for all that blinkin' rustling :shock:

The only down-side to the aforementioned is the 'premium product' price... perhaps it's not too late to ask Santa!

I too have the Ortliebs, though my cloths go into a lightweight waterproof rugsack which doubles as a shopping/daysack and my sleeping bag goes into its own waterproof compression sack, just in case

Did tour from South to North and back and it poured with rain, Ortlieb backrollers were incredible. Buy them.

Ortlieb, nothing is quite so satisfying as putting on dry clothes after
a day of riding in the rain.

The knock on Ortlieb is abrasion damage from leaning against rock walls etc.

Has anyone come across these panniers by a Polish company Crosso? I read about them on a blog and they were written of favourably.

The Crosso panniers look good, but according to http://www.lancerushing.com/bicycling/panniers.cfm, they are held down with stretched rubber. My old Karrimors worked like that, which was fine until year 2 when the rubber perished and went "ping".
