you're after a bike that you can't love, nor want to restore or modify...isn't an R20 perfect? :P

corshamjim wrote:I think the trick is to get a bike which is a bit unpleasant to ride. My Dahon folder is like that - mildly uncomfortable, a horrible pasty blue colour, and already a bit wrecked having been kept by its previous owner on a boat. Oh and to cap it all it has a derailleur. I would see if I could replace that with a hub gear, but it would still be rather awful even then so I can't be bothered.

You're totally right. It's all in the ride. It should be dreadful. I have an old folding bike (a non-make Chinese job) that ticks all the boxes for ugliness, appalling ride, and dedanglers. I was going to junk it, but maybe I won't. I do need a chunk of a Raleigh frame to make it fit, though.

Does anyone remember me asking if they have a Raleigh frame they'd cut the seat tube from for me, so I can make a taller saddle stem for the folder? Well, I'm back to needing it

Yes, in many ways. But by it's very nature, I will be seen on it. I don't have many standards, but the ones I do have I need to maintain

Ride it for a week for me. if you declare it to be the most hideous bike you've ever experienced and you are overcome with a desire to smash it to bits with a brick, then I'll have it

Don't shoot me I'm only the (unpaid) messenger.

uuuuuuggggghhhh... Must... resist... temptation....

I have a 1953 Clubman already, but it's a Humber.. I've been wanting a Rudge for ages to complete my set of RI bikes. I'm not registered on cyclechat however!

*Edit*
Made it to Ireland btw, Dad's not in a good way, but still with us physically at least. I'll hopefully be able to post a bit more now that the move is done.. Chris, I'm so sorry I never got back to you with photo's, frame is here with me, was half tempted by Mikes rims for it, as I have a *cough* spare FM hub I could have chucked into it.. I have all the components for that bike, just no rims!

Starting the Superbe Restoration shortly, think I may also do my Humber "Sports" at the same time as I may get a deal from the sprayer!

Take care!

Not that gorgeous black one?

Well I'd be happy to give a chunk of the seat tube a home on a very ugly folder

I am trying to get my five speed wheel sorted using as little money as possible. As well as bursting through the alloy shell, this S5.2 mechanism has one of the early type axles which won't retain bottom gear convincingly. I purchased one of the newer 5-Star hubs off ebay, knowing it only had 28 holes but guessing (wrongly) that I could fit the innards into a 36 spoked wheel with an AW hub. The low gear ratchet on the AW hub shell is much narrower than on the 5-Star hub. The low gear pawls on the fancy new hub are too close to the centre line of the bike and fail to engage with the ratchet in the hub shell. I therefore can't get the lower two gears.

If anyone has a 36 hole 5-Star hub shell they would consider swapping for my shiny 28 hole one I'd be very interested. Or one of the later S5.2 axles? My other plan is to drill an extra eight spoke holes and probably use a crowsfoot spoke pattern to try and conceal what I've done! I fear the hub shell may be a bit tough to drill. Feeling somewhat defeated. Time to come in from the cold garage.

That's really neat rjb, but can you HEAR it working? I think the post brew silence adds something to one's appreciation of the tea!

I guess you could make quite a nice little stove out of it, yes. :D

Seriously, if anyone wants the innards, give me a shout. I can't give you the shell though as it's built in to my wheel (and will get it's new X-RD3 innards on Saturday).
