Take no notice, they look alright to me - you'll need 'em long and low when you're putting the hammer down

I'm hoping they'll get me used to the position that the chancellor seems to want me in
HGF is only concerned because he thinks I'll leave him even further behind on the hills

They let me drive it!

Here is the footplate:

And the Driver:

And the Fireman:

And I even got the uniform:

best birthday present I've ever had!

And I can confirm driving a steam locomotive down a hill on the brakes is a hell of a lot more exciting than a bike :D

Thanks to Will for the photos

This is on account of Mrs MWS being very generous to me :D

Yes they did Tim. There is a 12 hour "Engineman's Day Experience" which costs a lot more where you start at 6am and finish at 6pm and involves waking the train up in the morning lubricating it, firing it up etc and cleaning it and putting it away in the evening. I reckon my 6 hour one where the engine was ready and waiting and looked after at the end of the day, was the better option! There are more pics here:

A day like that makes it worth getting older for, eh? I'd be grinning for at least a month after that
Happy birthday, Mike.

Had a Toggle Chain Tourette today, but without a toggle chain  30 beautiful miles (other than the 15 with a head wind) on the Viking Hosteller to Madgett's and back. It's SO much nicer to ride with high pressure 650a x 28 rather than the soft squidgy 590x37, total transformation.

Ordinarily it's a bit of a "take your life in your hands" ride, courtesy of the route being a rat run for motorists eager to reach take-off speed on twisty B roads. But today I tried the Bike Hub app on my phone and it suggested a couple of routes I wasn't familiar with. Beautiful, utterly beautiful. Villages and hamlets along the way, tree-lined lanes, even a bridleway I didn't know existed. I'm now in love with bike sat nav 8)

I got home this afternoon to a parcel containing the long-searched-for suitable chainguard for the BSA. I've put it on to see if it fits etc. Tonight I'll prepare it for a good coat of enamel.

A perfect end to a perfect day 8)

It is a proper bloke's toy, ain't it? :P SWMBO got me a Satmap for my berfday prezzie - it's nearly as hypnotic as watching the mpg display on the car
A totally non-essential gadget but good fun none the less  I wonder what Mr Starley would have made of it all
I was hoping that my new Sram hub would have landed today from Germany - no such luck. Back to thumb twiddling and painting the garage woodwork

Looks idyllic! Planning a ride today and thinking hard for roads that will be clear on a bank holiday weekend! I will try BikeHub as you suggest.Weather dry here but windy so I'm looking for a route the wind behind me in both directions.
