Cranks for a Rohloff 29er

Post by tad »

Hello, hello!

What cranks do the folks out there in CTC land recommend for a Rohloff equipped 29er? And what sized chainring are we running?

I'm after something as solid and dependable as the hub rather than something exotic, light weight and crack prone.

Cheerio,

On my hub geared bikes (two of) I run Middleburn cranks. They're tough cookies, trials riders like them and they take a good whack from rocks and other obstances.

On the Rohloff bike I have the Middleburn cranks, an XC spider and the 38 tooth DH chainring.

You can spec up the DH set up here:

I run one set with a square taper BB and another with ISIS (which is rubbish and wearing out already).

You can also get the new hollowtech style cranks:

For cranks, whatever you fancy, unless you're really intending to abuse them I doubt you'd notice much difference. I've stuck with square taper for simplicity and availability, plus I already had the tools. Stronglight/Sugino XD2 are simple, cheap and have been around long enough to have a decent reputation, there's also a Rohloff specific version with a single or double chainguard.

For chainring I like the Surley stainless steel ones. What's not to like?
