Do you cycle in Surrey? BEWARE!!!
Repost from here: http://www.lfgss.com/thread82002.html#post2765118
Surrey County Council have recently appointed Councillor John Furey as the cabinet member responsible for transport and the environment. He recently spoke at a meeting (20/0212) in which he stated "can we advise Surrey Highways that we don't spend money on cyclist any more - well not until they wear a day-glow vest, proper lights front and rear and are fully insured."
If that isn't bad enough, Councillor Furey is in charge of preparing Surrey roads for the Olympic events.
If that isn't bad enough... Councillor Furey apparently had a car crash, following which he left the scene of the accident and was subsequently prosecuted for driving with excess alcohol. He was banned from driving in July 2010 for the offence.

I confess my reaction was, "I can't believe, in this day and age, that a convicted drink-driver cyclist-hater would be appointed Surrey's tranport boss."
So I checked. It is true.

Difficult to imagine a less suitable candidate for such a post - or any public office.
How totally depressing.
I wonder if he's ever walked more than the distance from the car park to the bar in his life.

This person is an elected local councillor. He's pretty much immune to any amount of agittaion on cycling forums and to the extent that he seems to be courting the motoring lobby, he's probablyt pleased by the publicity.
Democracy is the answer. He'll be returned by a local ward with a constituency of a few thousand and a very low turnout. It needs an internet campaign for cyclists and vulnerable road users more generally in his ward to turn out on the day and vote against him.
Re: Do you cycle in Surrey? BEWARE!!!
Blimey ! So he wants Surrey cyclists to wear yellow vests / front rear lights and insurance
Well i wear a durex for my protection so i'm always covered What a cock-head he is

Well here in Shropshire I always wear bright clothing, use lights and I am insured through
the Ctc.
I suggest that councilors always wear day glow vests with a name on the back.
If it's good enough for cyclists then motorists can do it too.
Of course they're always law abiding

Thank goodness for soup.

This is why the previous guy was sacked

I expect the replacements were appointed based on seniority. Cllr. Furey is a borough council leader.
He certainly looks every inch the bloated old drunk.

I don't think that'll make him any brighter, unfortunately.
The lunatics really have taken over the asylum.
Re: Do you cycle in Surrey? BEWARE!!!
Doesn't it inspire confidence when we look at the fine example provided by our elected leaders?
Two with (alleged) conflicts of interest and one drink driver who hates cyclists. It says a lot when the driver "flees the scene" as the report says. All three would be happy to get away with whatever they are alleged to have done. Personal interests first. Makes me cross
If all cyclsts have to wear day glow vests, can I suggest all convicted drink drivers should wear dunces caps with a big D in the middle so we can spot them easier?

If it wasn't for cars, there wouldn't be the amount of tarmac that there is.

Great. I've just moved to Surrey!

Blimey, I am sitting at work right now on New Haw Road, albeit a bit further down than no 81, having cycled here as I do two or three times a week and have done for ten years. Should I regard my proximity to Mr Furey as a narrow escape ... or an opportunity?

Good post Tyran, As a Surrey resident I've emailed Surrey County Council using the link in your first post. I look forward to their reply.

I shouldn't bother phoning ... he's probably whizzing round the lanes wrecked!
Old enough to know better but too young to care.
