Advice on Dawes Ultra Galaxy
Advice on Dawes Ultra Galaxy
Due to unfortunate circumstances, I have my brother in laws ( who was a member of CTC.) cycle to sell. I am not a cyclist and when I look at bikes being sold with an array of technical detail , I do become slightly lost as to what are important details for cyclists. The bike he built is a Dawes Ultra Galaxy, a 57cm frame , the wheels are labelled mavic A719 and A319 36 spoke wheels, shimano tiagra gears and on the frame is a Reynolds 853 . I can find out more details. Can anyone advise if this is enough detail needed to advertise this. Not looking for top dollar, but a fair price as it was his pride and joy, and it needs to be sold, any ideas on value ?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Re: Advice on Dawes Ultra Galaxy
Do the "unfortunate circumstances" have anything to do with the bike?
I'd add the year of manufacture so people can look up the full spec and check RRP also an image and general description of its condition i.e. like new or well used etc would be helpful. Might also be worth adding what sort of price you'd expect as this is the time of year when the new bikes are out for the year and older models are sold off at a discount, 2010 Ultra Galaxy's are going for £900ish

Re: Advice on Dawes Ultra Galaxy
Thanks for quick reply, I was being tactful with regard to reason for the sale, my brother in law passed away(no, not on the bike!) The bike is fine and in very good condition.
As regards to your advise on the age of the bike, I cannot say if for certain it is a 2010 bike, all I can say, the frame was purchased new in Feb 2010 from Spa Cycles, and he built the cycle himself, that is what makes it difficult to value.
I attached link below re photos taken. Please feel free to comment and advise if this subject is on the correct board.

Re: Advice on Dawes Ultra Galaxy
Unfortunately, nearly-new bikes take a big drop in price on their first resale.
That it seems to be a mixture of components rather than an off-peg specification may make it rather less attractive / valuable.
I hope this is not outrageously wrong, but I would start your advertising at £599 and see what happens.
Hopefully, others will offer their opinions.
PS. What are the tooth counts on the front (three ) chainrings ??
What is the tooth count on the largest rear cassette gear ?

Thank you, I have had a count and the front three count is 24,38 and 46 and on the largest
rear the count is 34. does this make sense.
Cheers

I dont agree with Graham about the parts being different from specification making the bike worth less.
The pictures show that your brother in law upgraded many parts with expensive quality equipment. A discerning eye will look at those photographs and see a very attractive bike which he put a lot of money into.
I would try much higher than Graham suggests.

I strongly agree with this .. the bike is worth alot more than £599
If i was in your position i would find a local bike shop and ask for their advice as well but make it clear that you are not trying to sell it to them but just asking for their honest opinion on what the bike is worth

Re: Advice on Dawes Ultra Galaxy
Thanks for your positive comments, yes I have tried a couple of local bike shops but they seem to think it sounds a bit to specialised for them to value. I will keep trying to learn a bit more about all the parts over the coming weeks and put it on the "for sale" board on this forum for a fair and reasonable price and see how it goes, you all seem a friendly and knowledgeable bunch and I'm open to all the advice going, when did bikes get so technical?
Re: Advice on Dawes Ultra Galaxy
Fair enough. Perhaps ebay would gain the best price. i.e. an auction format.
My previous comments are based on a casual observation of relatively new and/or special bikes that appear for sale on this forum.
The initial, hoped-for-price, which might be a reasonable discount on the retail cost, can leave the bike unsold for some considerable time ( until a tempting reduction is offered or a lower price negotiated privately ).
But here we tend to be a knowledgeable and discerning readership and less prone to the excited frenzy of the auction format.
PS. Nice range of gears there !!

I agree with Meic as well. It looks like a great bike in really good condition and I am sure someone with jump at it. Ebay it with a reasonable reserve price.
