There is an interview with the owner of Carridice on "The bike show" podcast from Resonance FM dated 28 Nov 2011. The "duck" part of cotton duck refers to the square weave which is especially waterproof.

I looked into this myself when my new partner had a industrial sewing machine..
Hand sewing hells bells, we just sold a old friston and rossman semi industrial sewing machine on ebay for not much think it was 15 quid they are so cheep.
A old singer machine with a bunch of good sharp needles is prob better but it up to you.

there is a lot of good info out there on fabrics. I found sail makers have good tough fabrics for bags and stuff. ive been looking thru some of my online notes but couldnt find what i was looking for could be on another machine.
