If you carry a large load on your panniers I'd suggest mounting the carrier somewhere else instead; bending loads are probably worse than the compressive loads from your bodyweight.

all of this trouble came out because the old rack didn't have enough support for the pannier if they were too far back; so it was either too far forward (fouling against the heel) or too far back (fouling against the mudguard stays and spokes, sometimes!)

What bike is there out there with a larger rear triangle or constructed in such a way that the panniers can hang 6, 8 inches further back than on a traditional MTB?

maybe.. will allow a bracket to be made or fitted that fits onto the rear axle, at a distance backwards of your choice.

Shall try to make the current set up work, and if it doesnt; might well have to resort to this!
If the frame cracks - I will just transfer all of the lovely components I put onto my current frame to the spare that my friend has offered to me.
