what do you sit on?

Post by Manx Cat »

Nearly there now.

In fact we are off on our camping tour this week.

Thing is, I have put my tent up (needed teenager fresh from a music festival to help me, as the instructions assumed you knew what a fly sheet and a tent pole was - no pictures!).

Anyway put the thing up and down again (the tent that is,) a few times, and packed it all away now. I noticed how - well, uncomfortable it is, squatting on bent legs outside a tent - put up on wet ground.

So... what do you sit on, once your home from home is up and ready to go? So far, I just have by trusty bike bags and it seems a shame to sit on these while brewing up. Other than this, its bin bags and squatting, my legs went 'to sleep' yesterday while brewing, then I stood up and the world spun...

Shedman suggested a small 3 legged stool, but again, it all adds to excess weight and space.

Cheers

How about a cheap lightweight foam garden kneeling mat.
I take one with me when cycle camping and find it very handy.

I also take a Haglofs 3 legged stool on longer trips, good for sitting on to use my Trangia.
If you decide to take a 3 legged stool look for one which will not sink into soft ground.

A modern tough supermarket carrier bag. It serves 3 purposes -
1. as a bag
2. as something to sit/kneel on
3. as a temporary table cloth/eating surface

I like camping kit to be multi-purpose.

Binbags for me. Until I lose some of the personal ballast I carry.
If you have those fancy cellular sleeping mats, you can get a seat adaptor for them.

I've not used one for Cycle camping, don't really know why (makes mental note for next time  ), but when walking we use those fold-in-4 closed cell foam mats which you can get for a quid or two in outdoor shops.

I quite like these. I like the back support. Fine for sitting around eating, drinking and chatting. Light, too: 300g (a kilogram with the mat -a cheap(er) thermorest copy).

I use a woven nylon stuffsac, or a cotton bag, as this can be stuffed with clothes and used a pillow.

On the subject of sitting comfortably, if you and a friend lean back to back whilst sitting on the ground, your back is supported without needing a chair.
If you both lie down, in opposite directions, head to head, you can place your heads on each other's shoulders, and this is also relaxing. It is better to improvise a pillow, though, else you won't both fit in the tent when it is time to sleep.

Just finished 3 weeks of crisscrossing Wales. We carried Crazy Creek chairs. They aren't necessarily the lightest, that goes to the pub chairs. However, they are very comfortable, we extend them out and use under sleeping pad torso area for additional comfort/insulation in the evening and the stays can easily be removed for splinting material.

I use a Thermarest chair kit as mentioned by gentlegreen and John-D. Though I've traded the "fancy cellular mat" for a fancier, lighter, smaller packing (and more expensive) Thermarest NeoAir inflatable mattress. Slightly more awkward to get in to the chair sleeve than a self-inflating T-Rest but it does work and is very comfy.
