I remember an old crusty cyclist telling me that all the best cycle racers race because they are too clumsy to do anything else! Speaking for myself (although not classing my self as any kind of cycle racer) I probably do fall into that category. On the other hand there are plenty of cross overs - Roche driving rally cars, Merckx jnr playing pro footie, etc.

Anyway, it's all good stuff for cycling - cyclists becoming TV celebs..who'd have thunk it in this day and age. Good luck to her.

Wasn't a certain Mr Mark Cavendish something of a regional junior ballroom champ before he fitted his cleats....?

At least Victoria's presence will make me watch the show. (I'm sorry if that is rather shallow )

Years ago, most cyclists only trained on the bike. For a long time now as you all know they train with different disciplines. Does anyone remember when Beryl Burton was in the Krypton Factor? I think she came last. My Mum and I were talking about it the other day.

I'm sure Victoria will do amazingly well in Strictly Come Dancing, although I don't watch the programme.

I certainly remember when Raymond Polidor was in one of those TV sports competitions where they had stars from half a dozen different sports competing but they couldn't do their own specialist sport. He never stopped laughing and giggling.

I've done a quick google and the programme was Superstars and its offshoots. I can't find anything about RP not taking it seriously, though.

According to Wikipedia it's a combination of the two. Silver medal gymnast Louis Smith is taking part and given the precision of movement and body control required in that sport he should do well.

I can't stand the stupid artificial programme but I hope she gets paid well for it.

Well, at the risk of appearing shallow or stupid (or both) I shall nail my colours to the mast and admit I enjoy SCD. I could do without Brucie, but otherwise I enjoy the colour, the flamboyance, and yes, the dancing (particularly the ballroom).

I know its a silly programme, but for me it brightens up dull winter Saturday evenings.

As regards VP - well, she's obviously fit, prepared to work hard and probably very supple, but if she hasn't got any rhythm she won't get far. She looked very wooden on the first programme, and Louis Smith not a lot better. Its not always the obvious person who wins SCD.

As regards voting - they seem to change the system every year, but viewer votes always play a big part of it.

Watching Victoria Pendleton on television, riding away from an interview outside some Olympic venue or other, I noted that I wear the same type/make of helmet as she does.

I've signed autographs on the strength of it.

However, as to the type of dress she'll be wearing if she does apppear, in another life, on a dancing programme.................the mimicry will not extend.

How will she look at and listen to those judges without being sick?

However, as a cyclist - and good one at that - are you sure VP is supple? Since I took up cycle-commuting and my fitness and mileage increased, I found that I got sort of muscle-bound in the legs. It's still the case now, so supple I ain't! The only rhythm it helps is a good cadence!

Is cycling a good method of getting an all-over fitness and achieving supple joints?
