Yorkshire TdF stages backlash starts
I saw this link
http://www.cravenherald.co.uk/news/1027 ... nce_route/
on Facebook.
They're on about groups of irresponsible cyclists causing mayhem. One place they mention, Embsay, must be on a pretty steep slope as they mention cyclists hitting 50 MPH.
Reading the comments it would appear that everyone believes this piece to be rubbish including village residents who have been subject to some of the anti social behaviour alleged to have been committed by cyclists.

I'm not old and cynical, I'm realistic!

I don't want to cycle the route.“every cyclist worth his salt” would want to cycle the route.
I'm a master of sweeping statements, trouble is, I hate other people making them!

I for one am certainly keen on cycling the route. Hopefully I will perhaps next year.
But I don't like the tone of the article which tries to say that the mere presence of the cyclists is an issue. Whereas them riding anti-socially is an issue! Riding at high speed in a group through a village - TdF style certainly isn't a good idea.
PS. Why does it keep mentioning "National Cycle Route" I'm not sure what that has to do with a Tour de France stage?

Of course the amusing thing is that it's the RLJin which is illegal, but only mentioned as a side issued to the fact that they "sped through the village" which isn't against the law (not directly, care and attention might come into force)
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.

Of course it's not illegal, but in some cases you could say it's anti-social.
BTW has anyone done the route? Any good?

Hi,
You dont have to go far from where I live to hit 48.5 MPH, Without trying, so on its own is nothing.
I can believe Groups of people can cause antisocial behaveur, what ever form of transport they use.
Especially that and increase of awareness of cycling fashion seems to bring out every Tom Dick and Harry on their bikes

Nearly as antisocial as traffic in the morning... (yes that is partly facetious)

Having read the article and cycled in the Craven area myself, it's obvious that the Councillor and Police chief are complete and utter twits.
If they'd enough brain cells to realise the stupidity of their statements they simply wouldn't have made them.
Other than the reports of RLJing which could be credible, all other comments made by them are stupid, highly unlikely or downright physically impossible
About half way down the comment section, the the paper's editor says he is only publishing what these two anti cycling morons have said and says their statement will be balanced by cyclists comment next week.
Why,oh why, weren't those comments published in the same article?

Still, the comments at the end are the most enlightened I've read following any previous piece about anti social cycling.
Edit: sorry hadn't seen previous post.

Is he saying the old people are pinching the wing mirrors?

I think wing mirrors went missing from motor cars some time at the end of the 1970s didn't they?
Re: Yorkshire TdF stages backlash starts
wow you're not wrong about the comments. I usually avoid comments sections as they are often full of the "yeah, cyclists are scum" attitude. But some very well put points indeed.

It's a while since I've been but the café at Embsay station (steam trains to Bolton Abbey) used to be nice.
I see it still has a cyclists' recommendation:

Perhaps because the Councillor may not have had enough rope to hang himself quite so spectacularly if some space in the initial article had been given over to opposing views?
