Try a new bearing in the BB for starters,if they drop in without any tapping then you can use a liquid material called Bearing Fit ,it takes up any small amount of free play.
I don't think you will have any problem with the fit of the bearings into the BB.
If they fit ok then i would use grease and when the bearing in the frame is fitted,i would fill the BB shell from the other side with grease,and i mean FILL.i would rather have a mass of grease in there than water!
Then you can fit your axle into place and it will be lubed as it pushes into the bearing,excess grease will be pushed out very messy.

Won`t that grease find the easiest route-up the seat and down tube,rather than into the opposite bearing?
I think i would go for decent`waterproof`grease pressed into the bearings themselves,and a drain hole drilled into the lowest point of the BB shell IF water ingress is an issue.
A good time to Waxoyl the frame eh?

Relief ALL round at getting that bolt end out me thinks.

And the broken bolt end was the easiest job of it all!

I have now on good authority that the spindle has done its deeds and needs to be retired. And it's evident after a night in vinegar, the corrosion hasn't come off. It's no good using this spindle again, which is a real shame, but not the end of the world. As you guys already knew, this thread's resident expert has one he's willing to give to me. Very relieved.

As for the waterproof issue: how often should I service the BB once it's done, every year? Every five years, ten? How many times do you service yours? Surely, the less one tempers with the shell, the better?

They are supposed to be sealed bearings. I've never serviced mine, they've been replaced twice in the past 34 years.
And I agree that the less often you hammer bearings in and out of the shell, the better. They are a tight fit.

That's great to know. Guess it depends on how much you use the bike. I normally don't go on bike tours, but use it to cycle around London and sometimes go for a bit of a 'race' in Camden, but that's it. Not sure how the water got in, but I think it may be either from the seat (water splashing up in the rain) or through the shot bearing. Maybe worth trying to close that seat post hole, put a cork inside or so to prevent water getting in that way.

Yes, close that seat post. Or get mudguards. Or both. The reason my Sport has a threaded BB is that back in the day the BB seize up totally. When the lbs* got them out they said the shell was full of water. It had splashed up from the back wheel, hit the underside of my imitation Unicantor saddle and went all the way down the seat-pin, seat tube and into B shell. b

I'm guessing you're not all too happy with it? And how could anyone advise to throw out the Viscount hubs? From what I've read so far, not only are they the best fit (for obvious reasons), but also run pretty smooth.

Hi, everyone.

In order to get Shawn moving safely again, I'm building the wheels myself. I already have a Viscount front hub, and the lovely Cusqueno has kindly offered me a rear hub shell.

So, the question is: does any axle work, provided that they're the size needed?
Which size do I need, as we're at it? I know the front ONL should be 100mm, and I think I recall that the rear should be 126mm, is that correct?
And it should be one that takes a 5-speed freewheel, right?

Sorry if I disturb the conversations. If it's the wrong thread to ask, please let me know. I just assume that, if I posted elsewhere, I get directed to this thread anyway.
