Rear rack specifically for 26" wheels

Post by ericet74 »

My wife has very short legs and rides a Surly Long Haul Trucker with the seat post all the way down. The problem with this is most racks these days are made for both 26 and 700cc wheels. With her seat so low it puts the top of the rack at seat height. The Surly has 26 wheels and the top of the wheels is well below the saddle. I'm looking for a rack which would sit right above the wheels and lower the weight she carries on our next tour. Does anyone have any suggestions?

If you just want to fit the panniers lower, a rack with 2 sets of rails like Tubus Logo would work.
Tubus certainly make a "cargo" rack for 26", but its not much lower than the 700c version.

http://tubus.com/product.php?xn=1 gets you to the classic Tubus Cargo spec - you can get dimensions etc from that page :)
Convention? what's that then?

I have looked at the tubus classic and the 26" model is only 1cm lower. Your right a rack with two sets of rails would work to lower the bags but was hoping to find something with the overall height being lower.

I bought my Tubus rack a few years ago so I've forgotten the model name (Cosmo?) but there's a second lower side rail. The panniers hook onto this and the bottom of the pannier is about level with the axle (I have a 26-inch wheel bike). I don't think you could go much lower.

Its called the Logo http://tubus.com/product.php?xn=2 - Been using one since 2004 on my 24" wheel Airnimal - couldn't get the bags much lower without dragging the floor! Newer Ti Carry is slightly lower but we are talking a few mm's. :D

The Blackburn MTN Rack is specifically designed for 26" wheel (mountain) bikes. The measurement from the securing bolt (from the boss) just above the rear axle to the top of the platform is 34cms. In comparison the rack on my 700c wheeled bike measures 39cms.

Currently the Blackburn rack is half price (£17.49) at Evans:-

I use the 26" Cargo rack on my 700c wheel bike. It looks sleeker and there's no reason to use the 700c Cargo unless you're running 40mm tyres upwards.

Have you thought of fitting a front rack and panniers on the back?

It's good to keep the weight low but given that many people pile it on top of the rack and even in saddle bags, would it make that much difference? Some people even carry it on their backs. Packing with the heavy stuff at the bottom might also help. I would like to hear others' opinions on this.

Re, the Cargo 26" rack. If you really want to get it lower, then it might be possible to mount it via the mudguard eyelets on the rack. These are 1" above the regular rack/dropout mounts. Use the thick spacers that Tubus supply with the rack to prevent fouling the seat stays; you may need to saw off the regular mounts to prevent obstruction of the quick release.

Couple of discounted (£19.99) Minoura steel racks from Planet X for 26" wheels:

I don't know the weight or height of these but I would go for the 1st one, the MT700, as the design looks quite solid, it has that triangulation that CJ mentioned on another thread. I have just ordered one for my daughter's MBT based bike, will let you know it's vital statistics and what I think of it when it arrives.

EDIT: I also ordered one of their £1.99 inner tubes to bring the price up to the 'over £20' bracket and qualify for free P+P

Wow! I presume this would definitely not fit a 700C touring bike :?
