Even later to the party but (adding to kcal's post)... If you can get to Ballater, then take the Deeside Way from there to Aberdeen (Duthie Park) and you have the whole route. Deeside Way takes the route of the old railway line Ballater to Aboyne then up to Deeside Activity Centre, drop down to Kincardine O Neil (a wee bit of tarmac but not much), then climbs up to Shooting Greens at Blackhall Woods, drops down to Banchory and then follows the railway line again all the way to Aberdeen. Is reasonably well signposted too. If you haven't already done, enjoy your trip.
If there was a pessimism competition, I probably wouldn't qualify.
