Small metalwork Job

Post by Cunobelin »

I have a couple of Windwrap fairings that I want to adapt

This is the business end I need

Image

1. Basically a piece of metal tubing of specific width and length, with a hole drilled through and a couple of L shaped plates that have the correct width and hole aperture for the fairing bolts

Where would be the best place to get these made.

Could you elaborate?

Edit: I see that you have.

B&Q sell tubing in various sizes and metals.

They also do plastic end plugs for tubing.

The brackets could be made from straight metal strip. So a hacksaw, vice and drill should make short work of this.
There may also be little brackets as well saving you making them.

P.S. Does the tube have to round or would square section work as well?

You'll never know if you don't try it.

Google "Aluminium Warehouse" for a reasonably comprehensive list of tube sizes and angle to make brackets.
westfield fasteners for stainless bolts, etc.
Google "O" ring suppliers for the rubber buffers.
Then you need somebody with a vice, hacksaw, file, and battery drill....its not exactly precision engineering, doesn't even really need a pillar drill.

I work next to a steel fabricator. They have told me they can produce just about anything. Not sure about coming in off the street for it, or whether the finish would be great, but if you know a fabricator, or a friend of a friend, that would be worth contacting as a start. Do you know the dimensions of the tubing, to check if it is available as general stock?

I've used aluminium channel from eBay suppliers to make Streamer fairing mounts: using U or L shaped aluminium means no bending to weaken the metal (I think they are extruded in one piece), ditto tubing. It's straightforward to file the sections to the desired shape and drill holes as desired. If you need a quick release clamp to tubing then hydraulic tubing clamps work well with a seat QR one end. Much cheaper than the official replacement mounts...

Thanks folks - confirmed my thoughts, although my fabrication skills are not the greatest!
