Town centre fun hill climb?

Post by PaulCumbria »

Anyone know of hill climb in a town centre, open to the general public? I'm sure I saw a video of one of these, and wonder whether my town could do something similar to encourage local cycling.

I think there's one in Bradford-On-Avon very soon when the tour of Britain comes through. Don't know if it's open to all though.

Church Street in Malvern on Wednesday 10th September as a part of events to do with the Tour of Britain. http://www.visitthemalverns.org/tour_of_britain programme of events towards the bottom of the page. Public hill climbs have been run here several times in the last few years under the Malvern Fringe http://www.malvernfringe.co.uk/ see cycling time trials on the left of the page. I know that a similar hill climb was run in Norfolk a few years ago.

Surely missing an essential ingredient, no?

No. I think it was in Norwich where they have a short sharp hill. It is a few years ago but I remember the organiser contacting me for hints because he knew I'd been involved with the Malvern one.

The thing to remember is that this is to suit the public, so a great long hill is no good. The Malvern one is something like 100 to 150 yards but pretty steep. It is the main shopping street which is closed for the duration. Lots of local clubmen rode it, teenagers on BMX bikes do well because it is so short and pretty intense, kids on their little bikes ride it, an elderly gent rode his shopper, and a local racing man rode his Ordinary. In the past the Malvern Fringe has been the organising body with timekeeping and help provided by local clubs.

I will not have it suggested or even implied that there are no hills in Norfolk.

Great info - thanks everyone.

Does anyone know if this has been done in Lincoln? It has a really steep town centre hill called, logically enough, Steep Hill. It's steep (naturally) narrow and cobbled in places.

I saw a really good video of a fun hill climb up a road like that, which really gave a flavour of the event, especially how it involved the spectators (as the riders are moving so slowly the viewers get drawn in), but I'm blowed if I can track it down.

Any help once again appreciated.

The Norwich one is probably on the quiet road next to the inner ring up Grapes Hill.

The OP may be thinking of the Cobble Wobble in Frome, Somerset. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frome_Cobble_Wobble but someone has squatted on their website. It looks like it may not be running any longer. Someone at road.cc or Charge bikes may know.

There was a hill climb up The Mount in Edinburgh a few months back. I think it was a Red Bull sponsored event.

I don't think you could have a hill climb up Steep hill in Lincoln as it's a pedestrian area I think but the Lincoln Grand Prix does a few circuits via a different route up that hill every May.

Bank Road in Matlock gets used fairly often, both for local and national events.

Lincoln GP goes up the cobbled climb of Michaelgate each lap, which is next to Steep Hill. I don't think Steep Hill is very accessible at the bottom end.
