Next year we are planning on riding across France, to minimize the number of checked bags we put our paniers in suitcases obtained from charity shops (one suitcase each) and dispose of them at the start of the tour. They must have charity shops in France. How do I ask at the hotel/B & B for directions to the nearest charity shop? My French is fairly good so I can handle the 'where is' part, is there a generic term like 'charity shop' as one can use in the US or UK?

There's the Secours Catholique in some towns, I think that's the correct spelling.

You could try looking for the local Emmaüs (emm-ah-ooce) branch. They're a widespread charitable organization with a very good reputation, who sell donated goods from unwanted Christmas presents to large chunks of furniture. They do have a website http://www.emmaus-france.org/ with a shop-finder but this doesn't work too well. Better look on http://www.pagesjaunes.fr for "emmaus" in the town you're heading for.

Another option is the Troc: not a charity they act as an intermediary between buyer and seller
