Guy Martin does recumbents!!!!!!

Post by Cunobelin »

For those who are unfamiliar Guy Martin is a British Engineer who does some brilliant programmes on the BBC about engineering and speed.

Here is a previous episode

This week he is looking at how far you can cycle in 24 hours

The interest for this site?

Two contributors are of note: Mike Burrows (Wind cheetah, and others) and Miles Kingsbury (KingCyle, K3 and others)

The potential for Guy Martin with these pioneers of recumbent cycling is looking like being good viewing

Must work out how to download ;)

Looking forward to this, I've read elsewhere, (but can't remember where) that they attempt the ride on a custom built tandem trike.

Hi,
I like Guy, his enthusiasm is infectous.

But I do question his record breaking attempts in respect to actual breaking a record as opposed to "well he did'nt quite make it" "But there is a record for staying upright whilst attempting it"

I wont stop watching him at all.......what a job :)

The last record I saw him try was that of draft cycling. And he did get the UK record IIRC.

Of course it wasn't helped that his planned surface was made unavailable just before the attempt, so he ended up riding on sand (and associated increase in dust kicked up by the racing lorry)

The way he goes on reminds me of Fred Dibnah.

Interesting that the cranks are ninety degrees out - makes the power transfer much smoother but hardly ever seen on normal tandems as things get a bit strange when trying to ride out of the saddle.

Probably minimises friction effects when legs rub

I'm no expert on two up of any type but if one stops pedaling and the other keeps going, your feet might pull out :?:
In competition this would not be a problem but here maybe there are seperate free wheeling devices :?:

Not something that happens much on normal tandems, even when the riders have massively different power outputs (like me and 'er on the back). In reality most people don't just stop and lock their legs (like leg/skid braking a fixie) but just cut the effort and let their legs slow naturally. Thus I can't see them having freewheels on the cranks for this reason....but there might be another.
