Speeding cyclists on LBC now

Get you cyclist bingo card at the ready..........

I understand that this cyclist was stopped in a London park for going to fast.

Wait for it to talk about speeding cyclists on the roads.

I've had people complain to me about speeding cyclists on the road. I always ask what was the speed limit. 30, we'll have you tried going 30 mph on a bike.

I'm afraid to say that the CTC is not really putting his points across very well or doing well with the answers.

I also think that he admitted that he was not in CTC for very long.

What speed limits are they talking about. Because, as I understood things Highway Code section 125 defined speed limits and there are no speed limits for cycles (unless there are local byelaws in operation).

So in your everyday 30 mph speed limit, a cycle doing 35 mph is not breaking any laws.

I would imagine there might be other considerations related to safety but those would be called something like "Cycling dangerously".

Have I misunderstood things (quite possible) ?

Discussion appears to be about Hyde Park or perhaps some of the other Royal Parks.

On some paths there are speed limits for cyclists set through bye-laws. These are enforceable. From time to time there are crackdowns which usually get a mention on the forum.

I think the discussion is moving away from cycling now...

As it understand it the London royal parks are the only places in the country where there are legally enforceable bicycle speed limits?

@Muhammad_Muneer: @LBC @clivebull put number plates on those things.
And get them insured, so next time when they hit your car, you can sue them for damages

To my knowledge there are a few similar bye-laws on promenades.

There's also been some speculation that certain (or all) 20 mph limits on the public highway apply to all vehicles rather than just motor vehicles. Might be right, might be wrong; I can't quote any legislation and I'm not inclined to go looking for it.

The LBC discussion seems to be moving on to pink dog poo which must be of equal importance to their listeners :mrgreen:

Maybe some tunnels and bridges where the speed limits are set by byelaws rather than national legislation?

EDIT: Yep, the Queensway (Mersey) Tunnel has a speed limit of 30mph which applies to "vehicles" rather than "motor vehicles"

It also technically has minimum speed of 10mph. Is this the only minimum speed applicable to cyclists?

This text appears on the websites of several local councils and says 20mph limits apply to all road users including cyclists. Not sure where the law is behind that.
