Tyres for Kinetix Pro 406 wheels

Post by GOHughes »

I need to replace the Schwalbe Kojak tyres on my MU SL an wanted something with a bit of tread so I can ride on towpaths. I bought a Sensame Firenze 406 x 1.5" tyre from Halfords hoping this would be a cheaper alternative. To Halfords credit they recommended Schwalbe Marathons but I was hoping not to have to spend that much. Does anyone have any ideas why a 406 tyre can be too big. The Kojaks are 406 so where is the difference? I have read Sheldon Brown's post on Erto measurements but surely 406 tyres should be the same size.

All 406 tyres will fit a 406 rim. But not all 20" rims are 406. Other than that the only restriction would be frame/brake/mudguard clearance.

EDIT: After a quick search it seems they aren't 406 but are 451 http://www.jejamescycles.co.uk/dahon-mu ... 82615.html On that note I have a schwalbe durano 451 tyre you can have for the cost of post as I accedently bought it instead of a 406 (moulton size).

Thanks for your kind offer but the MU SL I have is the old version, now dicontinued, which does indeed have 406 wheels. The tyre I bought was clearly marked 406 but was big enough for the unshod wheel to pass right through with a cm to spare!

Either the wheels are smaller than 406 or the tyre is larger than 406. Even if both are marked as such one is wrongly marked. Do you still have the Kojaks and do they say they are 406s on them?

Hi,

My best guess is your tyres are these : (369mm)

An odd Moulton size, good luck finding a tyre.

I think that is the wrong way - the tyres are bigger than the wheel.

If the wheels are 406 then the tyres are almost certainly a mislabelled 451. It should be simple enough to measure across the inside of the beads with the tyre lying on a flat surface.

If the tyre turns out to be 406 then the wheels must be one of the 16"/17"/18" sizes at least 4cm smaller (rim side depth added to the cm to spare x2). Most of them are different enough that an approximate measurement should suffice.

It doesn't seem to be available on Schwalbe's site any more (at least I can't find it) but Evans have a copy here.

Hi,

Not at all, I'm referring to to the fitted Kojak's
that the OP is attempting to replace, and
therefore the implied 369mm wheel size.
Which clearly 406mm won't fit and will
clear the rim by the described ~ 1cm.

Its still the best guess IMO.

sjscycles.co.uk can help with tyre choice plus stock tubes. Halfords sell only rubbish so would avoid them.
