Retro string back mitts

Post by Godlykepower »

...can you still get them? I've seen a couple of places doing synthetic leather ones, but does anyone still make real leather, proper mitts?

I was going to treat myself to a pair of the Dromarti's, but it seems they no longer make them?

Looks like these people are selling off their ones:

but if anyone knows anywhere else I would love to know as well.

Those aren't really the style I'm after. They are very similar to the Rapha mitts which are meant to be brilliant, but I really want the string back, not full leather.

I'm tempted by the Brick Lane Bikes ones, but there is no sizing chart for me to consult. I might just take a punt on the synthetic Altura mitts in the meantime. I know they were stupidly expensive, but I'd love to have a pair of the Dromarti's if they were still available.

The Specialized 74 gloves are made with real leather (Pittards, to be specific) but are not string-backed. Expensive but well-reviewed. Have ulnar-nerve padding (“Body Geometry”).

Altura make or made a crotchet-style mitt but the palms are synthetic leather.

Brick Lane Bikes sell these, which seem to fit the bill, but I certainly can’t vouch for their quality or comfort.

And Bontrager do a Crotchet Glove which may also fit the bill. I don’t know if they’re available in Europe.

I’m looking for something similar and would welcome other suggestions.

Edit: I posted this before reading your insistence on a crocheted back.

I've had a couple of pairs of these over the past few years, good gloves, size can be a bit of gamble so be prepared to send them back for a different size if you order online.

Although sold as weightlifting gloves these are virtually identical to traditional string back track mitts.

The "weightlifting" gloves in the first link are sold for £1.99 or £2.49 depending on size.
When they become cycling gloves the price increases to £14.99 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Swiss-Retro-C ... 2ee04dc86a

I bought mine at a cycle jumble. But the gent I bought them from seems to be (was?) a trader, as I've seen him at other jumbles and cycling events. When I got mine (6 years go?), IIRC. they were £1 per pair. I've seen similar ones at Mildenhalll rally, sold by someone else.

There have been a couple of other threads about this, too.

I have the Altura crochet backed with 'synthetic' leather palms, which are well made, wash easily and are lasting well. They have a very useful advantage - for there is a piece of toweling on the upperside of the thumb to provide those of us whose nose much runneth, some benefit from a swift wipe after port or starboard snot rocket manoeuvres

When Cycle Promotions used to go to the York rally they always had a big box of track mitts at a quid a pair. Presumably they did they same at other places.

Now that you mention it, I did see some at Cycle Promotions sales. And it may have been them at Mildenhall. But I'm pretty sure that the gent I bought mine from was independent. I chatted with him a little (and bought a couple of other items at the same time as the mitts). I did see him at other jumbles and things, but I don't know how far he ranged, as I never travelled too far for that sort of thing, myself.

Decathlon had them last time I went in there (and bough 3 pairs) - crochet back, padded, suede finish palms. Superb.

What are the best ways of cleaning/washing leather and crochet mitts? Does the leather benefit from any dressing?
