Campsite suggestions near Ross-on-Wye

Post by noel.shearer@uuplc.co.uk »

Hi - we are doing the CTC B&B route, but camping. I am trying to find a campsite somewhere within about 10 miles of Ross-on-Wye. Not looking for anything fancy, but more than a cold tap and drain! I have tried searching the forum for this information but nothing coming up.

Can anyone recommend somewhere from the vast experience here? Thanks in anticipation :)

The Wye Valley Youth Hostel is very nice.

(good selection of beer too)

(I'm definitely not a youth)

Is that the YH previously known as Welsh Bicknor?

Many years ago, 30+, we holidayed in Symonds Yat cause it was close to Bristol but far enough away and stayed right on the river at River Wye Camping, Google shows it to still be there.

That camp site is in a fantastic situation, in a steeply wooded valley. There is an orchard bit on the riverside.

There is an excellent campsite in the town, in a meadow behind Morrison's supermarket. It is expensive though around £18 a night for a tent and 2 people.
There is your way. There is my way. But there is no "the way".

Stayed at the site at Symmonds Yat, and it is (or was last I was there) a good place to stop over.

Symmonds Yat ok. Had problems with officious, teenage site managers. On another occasion I saw the owner/wife having a to-do with a complaint customer. Very poorly handled, but why bother with customer service when they have the monopoly? Typical really.

And the plastic shower curtain sticks to you! [emoji40]

At least the pub near the rapids is ok...b

Saracen's Head? There's another on the opposing side of the river where the ferry stops.

The outstanding memories of the campsite were the bi-lingual owners, speaking Welsh with a French accent and the maze next door.
