What is CoQ10?

We still don't quite know all of its jobs but it seems key in lots of cells. Some think it is bad that you have less when you take statins... Dang, statins is more than one syllable! Any more than that and it gets into longer words like energy and electron transfer and yes, I don't really understand most biology easily either, but these sorts of cholesterol numbers and drugs like statins made me ask lots and lots of questions.

GPS are obsessed with the supposed prophylactic effects of them. Given a choice they'll have all of us taking the bloody things. Mine had me on lots of different ones each with some ghastly side effect (ridiculously itchy fingers was one, swollen lips another, joint pain a third) until I called a halt to it.

Interesting thread.

I'm on Atorvastsatin 40mg at the moment and have flirted on and off with taking them and not taking them especially as I keep blaming the likes of a bad back on them. And I used to get headaches and dehydration.

But I went to see the specialist at the hospital recently and I had the highest LDL level she had ever seen so not taking them has become not an option. Rather worrying really.

I'm on the same as MickF, 80mg Atorvastatin marble sized pills every day. I generally always feel tired and stiff as an iron girder. Nose bleeds are also an issue and taking 2-3 Rennie's a day for indigestion is becoming pricy.
As a type 1 diabetic with more than my fair share of health problems though, I need to be careful about what I do re pills.

Interesting what people are saying about aches and pains, as my back is becoming quite an issue, I had back issues before, when I wasn't taking them, but only on long bike rides, not all the time.

and taking 2-3 Rennie's a day for indigestion is becoming pricy.

I also have acid reflux so I've been taking Omaprezole once a day and that sorts it out.

As a type 1 diabetic with more than my fair share of health problems though, I need to be careful about what I do re pills.

Diabetes is one thing I don't have thankfully, I seem to have everything else.

Hopefully this isn't wishful thinking.

Whereas I would constantly have a blocked/restricted nose and do mainly mouth-breathing, I'm finding I'm nose-breathing even overnight. This is unheard of for me for many years.

Also, I feel "younger", less stiff, less achey, less "drained". Indigestion wasn't present yesterday or this afternoon and it normally is.
Strimming and cutting the grass today would normally have left me tired and stiff, but today was fine and it was easy as a breeze.

As I say, early days yet, and it may be just wishful thinking. I'm a pessimist at heart so I'm a bit suspicious about this "improvement".

Mind you, I could have a heart attack next week.

I know from personal experience that headache, nosebleeds, legs like lead, and feeling permanently knackered are all symptoms of high blood pressure.
Modern blood pressure medication is fantastic, I feel better now than I did 20 or so years ago when my high blood pressure started......at that time I was riding to work every day, often the long hilly way round, and I was fit.
It seems you have a good relationship with your GP, it would be worth a visit just to check your BP and other symptoms.
I don't suppose doing without statins for a month will do any measurable damage, but as you know familial hypercholesterolaemia is not a condition to be taken lightly.....add in high blood pressure and its a death sentence......(sorry to be blunt, but its true)

Anti-statinists, even doctors, are quite common but few are suffering familial hypercholesterolaemia. Many alternative therapies seem ineffective on most types of FH. EDIT: what I mean is "natural" products and supplements are also big business, not only big pharma, so keep the pinch of salt handy, check references as much as you can, and so on.

My BP has always been a little high. I have my own BP monitor bought from Lidl's a couple of years ago.

thats perfect, they won't medicate below about 145/85
