collapsed wheel beware!

Post by tb »

I know I like to get my monies worth out of my cycle components but I'll pay more attention in the future!
I thought this rim was in OK condition despite quite a few miles covered and I do clean and check them regular. However pumping up the rear tyre in the hallway, just about 100psi it collapsed and made the loudest bang and here's the results ...

Looks like a Mavic MA40.How old is it,what kind of use /mileage?
It looks like a classic worn out braking surface rim failure.

Hi,
Yep we've all been there.

I now measure all my rims and first check with the finger tells you how concave the brake surface is.

Under a millimetre and fit for the bin.

It varies on what the thickness of rim starts with when new but MTB's and touring rims tend to be thicker :?:

yes, spot on with your observations...Mavic MA40

obviously quite old with lots of commuting miles. I've worn out rims but never managed to collapse one...

Just pleased that it collapsed in my hallway and not on a fast descent

That doesn't come under my definition of collapsed. The wheel is still circular and the tension in the spokes won't have changed. It does fit under my category of 'buggered'.

I hate to admit it, but I have had a front wheel fail in a similar way. I was part way down a 1in 4 hill on Exmoor at the time (heading towards Hunters inn). The whole edge of the rim peeled away on one side. I managed to stop using the rear break only along with lots of swearing! I check my rims a bit more carefully now
