CTC Membership Insurance

Post by Velocio »

Does anyone know...

...whether CTC Membership Insurance covers us all the time or only when we are on CTC group rides?
...ever cycle ...ever CTC

You are covered any time you are riding your bike including commuting to work or on holiday abroad (except USA and Canada). You are not covered at times when you are being employed as a cyclist (eg. as a cycle courier) or taking part in some types of competitive cycling.

Are you covered for business use, i.e. riding to other locations for work purposes during the working day?

CTC (from PDF linked above) wrote:You are covered while you are using your cycle for private and professional purposes, including business cycling. You will not be insured if you are specifically employed as a cyclist e.g. as a cyclist-messenger or a carrier cyclist. (my bold)

I commuted on a bike to an office job. Sometimes I had to visit another office during the day and used the bike to get to it. Under a motor insurance policy this is definitely business use and attracts a higher premium.

The CTC explanation is a bit woolly - do they think that only cycle couriers use their bikes for business purposes? I'd like to see a ruling from whoever provides the CTC insurance and not trust someone else's interpretation.

It's the official guidance note from both CTC and the insurer, as stated in the above linked PDF:
This guidance sheet has been produced by CTC and Butterworth Spengler Insurance Group to offer guidance as to what you should do to minimize the potential for incidents to occur. CTC however are not authorized to give advice on insurance

IMO there's little wooliness about the section quoted by RickH, then again I doubt that you'll get a clearer explanation because all insurers like to leave some wriggle room.

That is what I thought too but in practice it often has a lower premium, the world of insurance works in unfathomable ways!

AIUI the standard CTC membership "Third Party" insurance would not cover Bikeability activity. CTC can provide specialist cover for such activities.

You may wish to post your enquiry on the National Standard Cycle Training board: viewforum.php?f=11
