There isn't one.

Most segregated paths are designed for approximately 12 mph, and the Department for Transport say that cyclists going faster than 18 mph should use the road.

That said, cyclists should take care in the presence of pedestrians, especially children, dog walkers, etc. There are many circumstances where 12 mph is probably too fast for a shared use faciltiy.

There are a small number of locations where bye-laws exist that do place an enforceable speed limit upon cyclists, including some Royal Parks and sea-side promenades.

I don't know where this sign is, nor if there is anything legal to back it up. (Edit: It's on the Isle of Wight, Newport connection route 23)



IMO the choice of a blue background was not intended to indicate a minimum speed limit, it was just an extremely poor choice .

I don't like the "Pedestrians have priority"

They already get in my way on purpose and don't even mention horse riders

Just add dogs and its mayhem.
Dog walkers don't seem to realise its easier to "Walk to your dog" quicker and safer all round than try and call your dog across the path , recall second hardest dog handling too retrieve..................

What I never understood from the recent Richmond Park case is that as bicycles are not fitted with the requisite instrumentation, even if a speed limit is imposed, how the bleeping hell are you to know whether or not you've broken it?

If anyone knows how they got that one to stand up in court, please enlighten the rest of us.

That 10mph should be in a red circle with cyclists added below. Otherwise it's just information that cyclists travel at 10 mph - pedestrians etc take note.
The sign basically indicates a design problem. Imagine that being put on a road.

On a shared path

I see few give way to peds signs.
The only one in my patch is a faded wooden one below eye level at a staggered gate, where a cyclist would need priority/ or safer.
Most peds would give way to me at a gate without my asking.
Then theres the walk through gate I suppose even if its staggered, how many cyclist dismount at staggered gates

Shared is shared, does it say in highway code cyclist give way to peds off road etc, I don't know without looking.

I always stop but only because I have too, yesterday two peds said thankyou to my use of bell and more raised their hand as thanks.
I am more than happy to share, but the cyclist I know has to take more care and halt where needed.

AFAIK there is no national legislation that allows for speed limits for bicycles so such a sign would have no meaning. Same as any sign is only conveying information that a traffic regulation order is in effect.

Part of the problem is Strava,through Chester from Mickle Trafford at one end and Neston at the other we have the Green Way. We offer see idiots going at great speed on TT bike with tri bars etc presumably trying to set records.
It's a multi used facility with walkers,kids on bikes, etc. A couple of speed bumps have been installed to slow this type down,it's only a matter of time before there is a nasty accident as has happened in the past.
