Cx tubs are not especially robust, see above, there is no need for them to be and they wear like **** on the road. Find the heaviest road tub you can. A treaded pattern is only needed for slick grassy mud and isn't needed for gravel etc. Cheap may be a good idea as they are not so expensive to wreck and for occasional use they are better value for money. I have found that expensive ones tend to repair easier but should you make a real mess it is less disastrous with a cheapy. I to find resticking the base tape perfectly the biggest hassle.
Now, tape or glue? Nearly as big a conflict as the helmet issue. I hate tape. Its is easier to get a perfectly straight fit with glue as you can keep yanking them off. I have never managed to replace a taped tub effectively on the side of the road. Half the tape stays with the tub and half stays on the rim. That way the new tube is half unstuck when replaced.
If you do go for tubs consider sealing the carcase as CX riders do. Little real need for tubs today except CX ( and I won't call non competitive riding round the woods and lanes CX) but equally there is little need for much of what we do. I have a set mounted for the Raleigh which I rarely use but so what.

I've got a 'heritage' bike that uses tubs. I need to get some new ones to get it back on the road for good weather Sunday nostalgia rides. Otherwise, outside of racing, I certainly couldn't be bothered with them.

Thanks, Ugly, that's a really useful piece on mending them. I've never seriously tried before - what's always put me off is finding the puncture, visions of gradually unstitching the whole thing before finding the actual visitation.

If you find some of this Corogna tape please let us know. I tried today and couldn't find anywhere where it was in stock. In particular I am after the wider 25mm tape, the 16.5mm seems a bit narrow to me and even though I would need to trim 2 to 3mm off the 25mm I think it would be a better bet.

One place listed it and I placed an online order, they then phoned to say it wouldn't be in for over a month. From the end of Oct I won't be needing to ride those wheels anymore until next year so I wasn't prepared to backorder.

Just wanted to report back on the Mariposa Carogna tub tape mentioned higher up in this thread.

http://www.effettomariposa.eu/en/produc ... y/carogna/

I recently wanted to use my racing wheels for the first time this year and didn't want to trust the Jantex tub tape already on.

Fortunately my LBS has now got some Carogna tape in stock, £11.90 per roll which only does one wheel. So not cheap to use.

However I must say it is marvellous stuff which I find confidence inspiring compared to other tapes I have tried.
Much thicker layer of softer adhesive than normal. The 20mm tape fitted my Mavic GL330 rims perfectly.
What also makes so much difference is the extremely strong peel away barrier tape, with the tub inflated to 60 psi as per instructions it was great to just pull the barrier tape away, no chance of it ripping like the others and no need to lift the tub up that all, meaning it stayed beautifully aligned.

Put over 140psi in and put the wheels in the kitchen overnight, really well stuck in the morning. So far I haven't found the tub creeps around like it did on the Jantex, meaning stopping sometimes to reverse the front wheel on a really steep hill (rare but can happen like when descending a hill on fixed gear only on the front brake). In my view the tub is as well stuck as with cement, but at a fraction of the hassle.

So if you really want to ride tubs highly recommended but at a cost. I must say that the Jantex tape seems to work just fine on someone else's carbon rims with Continental tubs that I put on, but is not secure enough on my flatter section metal rims.
