One pannier cyclists

General cycling advice ( NOT technical ! )

I am an MPC and embrace asymmetry. The only time I have fallen off my bike I was, in a brazenly out of character moment, using two panniers. I think we can all agree that this is conclusive proof of the dangers of symmetry.

I'm conisdering starting a petition to Gordon Brown demanding an end to the modern day scourge that is symmetry. Just think of all the evil symmetrical things in this world:

Cars, Bullets, Circles, Kate Moss...

The list goes on.

Perhaps its human nature but why does this ridiculous string (ie the alleged annoyance caused by us single pannier users) provoke 11 pages of comment when more serious and deserving topics get ignored? So get a life!! We should celebrate people riding a bike, not worry about how they carry things on it. FWIW I use one pannier rather than two because it's easier to just carry one into the office.

Two panniers full of freshly purchased shopping is just about acceptable IMO, but you should lash a baguette across the top of the rack to let others know of the extenuating circumstances.
Hanging your onions from the handlebars would be even better...

Today I made a discovery that is, to me at least, of great importance. The rest of you have probably known all about it for years: why did nobody tell me ?

I have been riding a bicycle with straight bars for the last ten years, and before that when I had dropped bars they were fitted with brake levers with the brake cable coming out of the top.

I now have a new ( to me, the frame is ancient ) bicycle with aero levers fitted fairly high up the bends, but no pannier(s) yet as I have not fitted a rack.

I find that the 'horn' on the top of the aero lever is perfect for hooking the handles of a plastic carrier bag, and the dropped part of the bar ( which is otherwise useless apart from acting as a holder for the gear levers ) holds the bag straight in a suitably aerodynamic configuration.

Should I dare to experiment with two carrier bags ?

I wouldnt hang one on my front lever, just in case the slipstream caused it to drag across the lever....
Anyway, that would be symmetrical  What's got into you?

Sorry, grovel, I can't imagine what I was thinking of, it won't happen again.

I must only use one bag
I must only use one bag

But with having only the one bag dangling from a lever, it might make the top of that lever uncomfortable.
Enough to require the use of a glove. But just the one,of course.

Returning this thread to being sensible again, if only briefly, please please do not hang shopping bags from the bars like that, it is very dangerous.
Though I can understand dangling smaller items such a string of onions, damn knew there was something I'd forgotten as well the tea bags.
Good job garage erectors drank coffee otherwise I would not be able to have my morning cuppa tomorrow.

Well, it does stop you using the brake, but being an asymmetrical person I don't use that one much anyway.
